On a linux machine, this phone binds to the cdc_acm driver (/dev/ttyACM0 on my machine). You can connect to it with a terminal emulator and it responds to limited AT commands, identifying itself as a NOKIA 6205(BALBOA).

Here is the usb vendor and product info while bound to the cdc_acm driver:

ID 0421:00a3 Nokia Mobile Phones

While in this mode, gnokii can't do anything useful. Neither does bitpim (at least not in Linux).

If you place the phone in Sync mode, the cdc_acm driver is unloaded, and this is the vendor and product info:

ID 05c6:3196 Qualcomm, Inc. CDMA Wireless Modem

Unfortunately, I have not found a Linux driver for it in this mode. In Windows XP, sync mode will allow WMP to transfer music (with the Verizon drivers loaded -- tested in 64-bit XP).
