Apple iPhone 3G
READ THIS BEFORE POSTING ANOTHER DUMB QUESTION

What will I pay for iPhone 3G?
If you are upgrade eligible and your account is in good standing, you will pay $199 for 8GB (black) and $299 for 16GB (black or white). Two-year contract required.
Upgrade "eligibility" is based on how long you have been in your current contract and other factors. If you are the primary number on an account you can be eligible as early as 13 months into your contract but depending on your rate plan, payment history and other factors you may not be eligible until 18 months or even 21 months into contract. Most phone lines will be "eligible" about 18-21 months into contract. If you are not a new AT&T customer, existing iPhone user, or "eligible" you will be able to purchase the phone at the "early upgrade price" which is comparable to the original iPhone pricing.
You have the option to purchase an early upgrade priced at $399 for 8GB (black) or $499 for 16GB (black or white). Two-year contract required. Coming soon, AT&T will offer a no-commitment option of $599 for 8GB and $699 for 16GB.
(INFORMATION STATED IN THIS ARTICLE ARE PROVIDED AT THE AT&T WEBSITE)
The "early upgrade" price is for those who do not qualify as "eligible" due to length of contract, payment history, non-pay suspensions, out of network usage, and other factors. Either way you wil not be activating it through iTunes or at the Apple store you will be activating it at the AT&T corporate store nearest you.
If you already have an iPhone you automatically qualify for the subsidized pricing $199 or $299 depending on the model. You will then be able to hand down the old iPhone to someone or sell it if you so wish.
If you are a new customer you automatically qualify for the subsidized pricing (signing up for new service).
If you get a (FAN) discount on your bill through your employer/school, the discount does NOT apply to the original iPhone data plan but it will apply to iPhone 3G and that is nice due to the fact that iPhone 3G data plans are $10 higher and do not include text. (Just like existing Blackberry and PDA plans)
If you upgrade from an existing iPhone you will keep your old phone. Sell it, give it away, hand it down..
You will NOT be asked at any point to turn in your existing iPhone..
The new iPhone plans do not include text so you will also need to choose a new plan. If you are already on a family plan that has unlimited family text messaging you will not need to make any changes. Text packages are sold on an individual basis unless you have multiple lines no the account and decide to go with unlimited messaging $30 per month which will cover up to 5 (FIVE) phone lines. If not you will choose from one of the following plans $5 200text, $15 1500text, $20 unlimited (individual basis) You do not have to have a text plan, you can be on a "pay per use" basis where you would have the ability to send and receive text messages at the rate of $0.20 per text and $0.30 per picture/MMS message (if it ends up being available)
Hope I didn't leave anything out.. and I hope this clears up some rumors from some ppl that have no idea what they are talking about.
So basically:
rate plan (primary line only)
PDA/BB/3g iphone data
family text
And of course, the smartphone data+text (or tethering, or whatever)
As long as it is OVER $30!

Thanks for the helpful info. I did want to clarify your statement regarding the discount on the data plan. This is for sure? I just spoke with an employee at a corporate store this AM and he stated that he was certain that discounts will apply to the voice portion of the monthly bill, but it had not been confirmed if any discount will apply to data.
the corporate discount NEVER applies to anything but the voice portion of the plan.
"(x)% discount off the monthly service charge of your Corporate Responsibility Users’ (CRUs) eligible voice and data plans priced at $34.99 per month or higher when you have 5 or more wireless users (including one CRU) associated with your AT&T Mobile Business account."

For anyone that is using another phone they need to call up att customer care, register the IMEI info to the agent on the profile and you will be eligible for an upgrade...simple as that!

Yeah no carrier will really insure any phone above $300 because it is just not cost effective but we have a work around with a different company.. It costs $69.99 for one year or $119.99 for two years which is actually insurance not APPLE CARE which is only an extended warranty. Warranty does NOT cover any physical or liquid damage.
AT&T no provides insurance on every phone we carry other than the iphone and go phones!
The insurance deductable goes up:
normal phones like a RAZR or Samsung 737 has a deductable of $50
Blackberrys, blackjacks, etc have a $125 deductable!
