when a phone is unlocked, that means there isn't a subsidy lock on it (ie AT&T or Tmo)

When you unlock a phone, you are removing the subsidy lock so you can take your phone to other phone carriers that are of course GSM.

A subsidy lock is put on all phones sold from phone carriers b/c they are "subsidizing" a portion of the cost of the phone. When you unlock it, you are now able to take it anywhere else.

Hope this helps. 😁
