V600 & analog modem capabilities

onix

Has anyone been successful using the Motorola V600 as an analog modem connected to a computer bu bluetooth or USB? This would mean using voice minutes as opposed to the digital GPRS capabilities (hopefully I'm explaining this correctly).

Also, are the analog modem capabilities service provider dependent?

And are there differences in experience using Windows vs. Mac OSX?

Thanks.

I called AT&T Wirless customer care, and they suggested I use the following software,

along with a tethered connection to the computer, preferabley through USB. To make sure you are not using mMode, and actually dialing your ISP, change the mMode server IP settings to something bogus, e.g. 0.0.0.0 or 1.1.1.1

Does anyone have experience with this approach?

Thanks.

I had a bad experience with AT&T when using a Nokia Bluetooth phone as a wireless modem in this way. I wanted to connect my PDA to a modem on my computer at home but was unable to successfully dial the number (it would appear to dial but it would never ring on the other end). After over 6 hours on hold or talking to multiple levels of tech support I was informed that while the phone has the feature it is disabled on the AT&T network and the only option was to buy their mobile internet package and connect through the internet..

I am currently waiting for T-Mobile to get the phone as I have already verified with them that I can use it as a wireless modem to communicate with other modems and have the time count against minuets and not som...

How does AT&T recognize that the fuzzy analog signal is for modems and not someone crackly voice? Are they sniffing, i.e. big-brother watching?

I think Cingular offers analog modem capabilites on their V400. I suppose when they merge, AT&T will also be offering.

I find AT&T's policy very strange and highly suspicious. And from a technical standpoint, I don't know how they figure out what signal is being carried...

Any of you guys remember the old days when telephone headset were placed on a modem cradle and transmitted at 1200 baud. The telephone company didn't care that the signal was not voice - in fact, it did not know!

It could be that they had something disabled in the phone software itself.. The signal may also have some sort of mode tag when connecting to the network.. that way they know if you are making a voice call or doing text messages or whatever.. Connecting with a device uses a different feature set than making a voice call (the speaker and mic are disabled and the information flows through either Bluetooth or the connecting cable) also it has to know to listen for a handshake from the remote modem to consider the call ‘connected’.. I was using Bluetooth so I would pair my iPAQ with the phone and then use the wireless modem profile.. the phone would act like it was dialing a number but it would always say no answer.. I even tried calling my hom...

Actually back in the day.. the phone company did care if you were using a modem.. you were supposed to notify them and they would charge you more for a ‘data quality’ line.. how they were supposed to deliver that with the same physical wires forming the connection wasn’t all that clear.. But as they did not have any enforcement mechanism in place to catch those of us ‘stealing’ data service by using our phones with our modems without paying the extra fee I don’t think that many people...
