They circumvent the way android works at killing down apps. It's like pulling the plug on your computer to shut down an program instead of just clicking the X.
Android does NOT need task killers. The reason your battery seems longer is because you're killing polling information (Twitter, Facebook, etc) and those don't auto start again until you enter them. You can get a similar effect (without killing your system) by setting those things to check less often for data, or just to refresh when you open them. Task killers provide a temporary battery boost, yes, but at the expense of system file corruption. THis is something I wrote awhile back:
