If I got an unlocked 6585 on ebay, and activated it with Verizon, would the voice mail indicator still work (like the little icon that shows up on the screen and the alerts to let you know you have a new voice mail)? What about for text messaging (would text messaging even work if the phone wasn't made specifically for VZW)?

Yes I have an unlocked Nokia 6585 with Verizon service and everything works great! All indicators and icons work fine.

and you can send text messages on the VZW network alright?

Yes text messaging works fine on Verizon's network.
