I completely fail to understand why T-Mobile still sells so many 2G-only phones. It only makes migrating to 3G and 4G harder for them.
Just gonna mean lots of pissed off people. Do yourself a favour and don't buy a 2G only phone.
T-Mobile only has one 2G only phone on their website for post paid customers to purchase, ONE! and its a refurb Nokia X2 and its FREE. This device was introduced as an upgrade to a 2G only handset so they are definitely moving away from 2G only devices on post paid lines. Plus I am sure customer service would help you with a free upgrade to an 3G compatible handset if you are still clutching your 2G device come EOL for the 2G network.
On the prepaid side they have 4 but given the average cost of those 4 devices ($49) I highly doubt it will be the financial ruin of anyone if they have to switch their handset when they finally get around to sunsetting their 2G network say in 2017 (see AT&T).

They have a lot on the prepaid side, and they just launched a NEW one not that long ago (the 665.)
The longer that customers have 2G-only phones, the harder it is to phase out the 2G network. It just doesn't make any sense. They are only making the looming network transition harder for themselves, and I don't understand why.
Lets face it, I imagine its not as easy to come up with budget dumb phones that utilize T-Mobiles AWS 3G.
Still with AT&T not shutting the door on 2G until 2017 I can't imagine with the build quality of todays promo devices many of them being left on the network at that point.
