Samsung SGH-P107

Same market as you. I live in Sterling, Virginia and I picked up a P107 from the Dulles Best Buy on Monday. At the time they had eight in stock.

So you've had it since monday, have you had to recharge it yet?

The phone is great! It's pretty much everything you would expect. It's pretty similar in functions to the S307, although a bit bigger. The outside display is great because since it's not color it stays on and is easy to read in any light. I have not had to recharge it yet, but I will probably do so tonight. Truth be told, however, I will probably return this phone only because I'm used to my Nokias and no matter how hard I try flip phones just don't do it for me. The reason I bought this phone was because out of all the flip phones for Cingular (minus Moto; I will never buy a Moto) this one was the most appealing. One more thing. The reception on the P107 is excellent! I have a Nokia 6200 which is known for it's superior reception and the Samsung matches it if not a tad bit better at times.

Hey thanks for the mini-review. I've always been a nokia guy myself and the thought of learning a non Nokia phone interface does sour me a lil but I want to try a flip phone and I too want to stay away from Motorola (though I must admit if a good enough deal fell on my lap for a V600 I would give it a try).

Reception and battery life are #1 for me so it looks like this phone gets a pass on those two things for the limited time you've had it anyway.

Dumb question. You say the P107 has no problem outside because "its not a color screen". What do you mean by that? I though being a camara phone that it WAS a color phone?

Yes it is a color phone. But the outside caller id display is not color and therefore uses less battery and in my opinion is easier to see outside (when compared to the S307) partly due to the fact that it stays on as opposed to the S307 whose outside screen shuts off after a few seconds. You have to hit a side key to turn it back on when you want to see it. In this respect the P107's outside screen is more user friendly.

I'm looking in to buying a phone through cingular and have narrowed it down to three and was hoping someone had some input on them. First there's the Samsung x427 (I'm a big fan of the small size). Then the Motorola v400 which I like b/c of the speakerphone and external caller ID (camera isn't really too important). Then I also like the Samsung P107, but it doesn't have the speakerphone. After rebates through Best Buy right now each phone is free except for $30 for the P107. I really like smaller phones thats why the x427 appeals to me so much, but external caller ID is also important and a speakerphone is always nice. If anyone has any info on any of these phones, or has a preference between the three it would be real helpful.

Okay let's see if I can help at all. First, if reliability is important I would stay away from Motorola altogether. My friend has the V400 and minor glitches now and then including freezing up and turning itself off. But on the bright side the phone has a lot of features and since all the phones you named are going to be around the same price the V400 offers a great value. I would say out of the three phones you named the P107 seems the biggest even though it's about the same size as the V400. It just feels bigger. You're right though, the X427 is small and with an external screen it would be perfect. I have also tried all of the phones mentioned, and I currently use the Moto V400, but I am ready to get rid of it. It has some software problems, and the speakerphone is not worth it in any situation with any background noise, you simply cannot hear the caller. Not to mention the earpiece volume is low, too. Compared to any Nokia that I have owned, the Moto V400's highest volume is comparable to a Nokia's lowest. It has a lot of great bells and whistles, but for simple phone calls go for something else. As for the Samsungs - the 307 is VERY small. It is small for most average men's hands I would say (my hand would cramp-up on medium-length conversations). I was in Best Buy this Saturday with the intention on purchasing the V400 for $129.99 with a 1 year commitment (upgrading from a Nokia 3360) when I started playing with the display phones. Well, the Samsung P107 ($99.99)really caught my eye, especially when you flip it open and closed, it makes a 'musical' sound. Needless to say, I walked out without my purchase. Now I'm really indecisive. Does anyone know if the V400 can be programmed to play tones when it is opened and closed?

Well I just picked one up at my local best buy yesterday (central NJ). The people working there didn't even know they had them and only found the phone when I asked them to please double check. Got it for $99 with a 1 year extension. Not bad AT ALL.

Anyway, so far I like this phone alot. I'm a very critical person too. The interface is different then my Nokia's but not bad really. I found navigating around the functions to be fairly easy and straight forward.

One of two things I don't like on this phone is the selection of ring tones. There are only about 8 and they suck. If I can find a way to get online (can a USB connector be purchased/used on this phone???) I'll look for better ones. The other thing I found is that the sound quali...

Follow up- Day two:

Well after two days of fiddling with this phone which should be causing the battery to drain I'm still full. Thats good.

The voice quality of the person with whom you are speaking with is definitely of a lesser quality then I am used to. If my past few Nokia's were a 10, this Samsung is a 7.
