Just lower the volume to 'no sound' with the LH side vol buttons. You'll be able to turn on/off the phone with no sound, no vibrate, nothing.

Very good idea but now people will complain that they have to raise the volume again when they turn it back on or else they won't hear the ringer then back down again before they shut it off. Guess you can't have everything. My suggestion was to cover the speaker in the back of the phone with your finger to mute the sound, this way, it isn't as loud 🙂

I preferred the tone at start up on the Audiovox CDM-9500.

I found there is 2 things you can do silence your ringer. 2. press and hold the star button, this will put it on vibrate and you won't hear the startup/shutdown sounds. 🙂
