Motorola V400
V400 and Sim Chips
I just got back from my local Cingular retail location and a guy I know who works there just stopped my from buying two LG4050's when he told me that the V400 will be there in the next couple of weeks and he will put two aside for me.
The question I have is regarding the review "emperior" or something to that effect did. He makes reference to how restrictive Cingulars software on the sims are and swapping it for an unlocked chip. Can this be done with Cingular as your provider OR do you have to use t-mobile as an example if you want to use a less restrictive sim chip?
If you can get them while using Cingular, where and how much?
Any help is appreciated.

Its not the sim cards that are locked it is the phones. Most of the companies in north america have the manufacturers "sim-lock" their phones so the phones that they sell will only accept a sim card from their company. As far as I know, every carrier in north america does this. If you are looking to get a v400 that was made for cingular service and you have cingular service now, you will be able to put in any cingular sim card and it should work fine.

I am going to pick up two v400's tomorrow. The local rep is holding the, for me. I asked him today about getting them unlocked and he said that the v400 comes unlocked. Is that a true statement?

the v400 is a quad band phone, which means it can work on all the GSM frequencies(850/900/1800/1900), but all cingular phones are "sim-locked" which means you can only use a cingular sim card with the phone. If you plan on traveling oversees, the phone would most likely work overthere (make sure that your account is set up for international roaming), but you would not be able to put in any other sim card other than a cingular sim card in the phone.

OK, I will check with him again tomorrow however he said that this is the first sim-unlocked phone he has seen. If not, I will have it remotely unlocked.

Yep, it's unlocked, I put my friends T-Mobile SIM in and it worked fine...even had "T-Mobile" banner on my screen
