First of all, let me say I'm pretty new at this phone stuff. I just got a v400, and I was wondering...In my plan, it's 1 cent per kilobyte, (which is going to screw me up when I get my phone bill) I skimmed through the Cingular site to see if there was a plan with free internet, like in t-Mobile where you pay an extra 4 dollars for unlimited internet. I'm asking because if there's such a thing, it's probably a more reasonable fee than 1 cent per kilobyte, considering I probably spent 7 dollars worth of kilobytes on the internet already. Any help would be appreciated. Thank you.

I'm pretty sure they have a few different plans available. I think you first have to pay $3.99/month to have internet access, then you can pay per KB downloaded. When I checked a few months ago, I was told I could pay an additional $79.99/month for unlimited internet access, but that was way too steep for me! They also offer the following:
5 MB = $19.99
10MB $29.99
20MB $39.99
60MB $59.99
Unlimited $79.99
As far as I know, there is nothing "free" that Cingular offers.

I have another question. In Verizon, when you dial some number, (might be *86, can't remember) it tells you how many minutes you talked. Is there a number like this on Cingular? I tried *86 and some machine started talking about activating something.

This is possible. I received an email from Cingular that explained how to check when they received your last payment, how many minutes you've used up, etc... by dialing a number. Unfortunately, I only tried it once and don't remember what the numbers were. Maybe somebody else knows???? If not, I'll check at home to see if I still have that email saved.

Basically, you'll get a text message containing the info you're looking for when you dial these numbers:
1) Check your outstanding balance
Dial *BAL# (*225#) on your phone.
Hit the Send key.
2) Check your minutes
Dial *MIN# (*646#) on your phone.
Hit the Send key.
3) Make a payment
Dial *PAY (*729) on your phone.
Hit the Send key.

That actually does sound like a good deal, but still too much for me! I have 2 phones and pay nearly $70/month... I'd hate to tack on an extra $20.00 on top of that for something I too would rarely use.

That's still a little too steep for me. I know it's a good deal but adding 20 bucks to my already heavy phone bill won't do my wallet any good. I thought it would be cheaper like T-Mobile, just 4 dollars. (according to my sister who uses it)

Oh yeah, another nice side bonus from that internet package...
You can connect your phone to a computer or laptop and, using MPT, use their internet service to do whatever you want on your computer as long as you're getting a decent signal on your phone. And it costs nothing since the internet access is unlimited and seperate from your phone minutes.
Oh, and it will work at speeds up to 112kbps. Of course that's download speed; upload speed suffers from a fair delay, and there are short pauses when browsing the web. But downloading decent sized files is where it really shines.
My friend who has the package uses it on his laptop all the time and gets speeds which are actually measurably about twice the speed of 56k dialup when downloading ...
