Help changing mp3 to midi

This may be very simple but I am having trouble changing my shortened mp3 or wave files to midi. I've tried renaming the file by putting .mid at the end but it doesn't change the format at all just the name. I need to effectively change them to .mid files for my datapilot software to recognize them. Any suggestions?

Okay, I finally figured out how to change the file extension to .mid but I can't get datapilot to recognize it. It says it is not a standard midi file. Does anyone have any idea how I can get datapilot to recognize my shortened mp3's and then transfer them to my vx7000?
