I talked to a retail store manager who I always known to be on top of things and knows what he is doing, and he said that the VX8000 should be out in a matter of weeks! (He also said the price point could be pretty scary 😡 )

Since 2003, Verizon has operated wireless broadband networks in Washington, D.C., in a partnership with Lucent Technologies, and in San Diego with Nortel Networks.

I did not clarify: This store is in Raleigh, where VZW is losing customers to the Nextel Broadband service, which is available only in Raleigh. Raleigh is going to be one of the first cities besides DC and San Diego that launches EV-DO, and will need equipment that can highlight that network.
