FRU vs. New
I called 611 and they sent me a new phone, but not in the box and without a battery (tech told me to just use the battery for the phone I have now). I figure it is a FRU. Which is better? FRU or new? Should I insist on a new one?

FRU is factory refurbished unit, just as good as new. At this time these phones are probably new VZW stock that was sent back and had the cam realigned.
