At buydotcom they are offering it for 299$ with 2 - 150$ rebates, with "new activation" i.e. a "new service subscription". Would that entail closing out an old Verizon account and starting from scratch, or merely renewing a 2 year contract with the new phone?

It's usually on a brand new contract so you would have to activate a new line! but i found a better deal from Amazon.com, the v710 is $130 - $150 rebate so you would make $20 if you buy the phone.
