MP3 ringtones on vzw question

So, I followed someone's suggestion and emailed myself an mp3 file to the phone. I did it once with an .mp3 extension, once with a .mid extension and once with a random extension I made up.

In each of the first two cases, the fine people at vzw (at least I'm pretty sure it is them and not the phone itself) decided to change it into a .qcp file - which it then won't let me assign as a ringtone. In the last case (the made up extension), the phone simply says it doesn't know what the file is and won't let me save it to the phone at all.

Any suggestions? Is this vzw's way of disabling sending yourself ringtones?

I am trying to do the exact same thing...Have you tried using the memory card to copy mp3's? Does it also mangle the extension?
