Does anybody know if all those software updates are in any way beneficial to us, or strictly another profit maker for VZW. Will we have to pay extra for every little thing?

Are you talking about the flash upgrades to phones?? If so, they usually are done to correct problems or provide additional capabilities. And I've had my phones flash updated many times and have never once been charged a dime.

actually taking about all the software changes that Moto had to perform, before the phone even is coming out. Are those test and changes only beneficial to VZW, or are we the consumer profiting from it.

I think we profit from them assuming the changes are made to make the phone more stable and/or work better. And, in that case, VZW profits from it too by not having unhappy customers returning with phones that need to be fixed.

Thanks for the info. Was more concerned of VZW having blocks installed for certain functions or aftermarket upgrades. f.e.(not being able to download pictures directly, but having to go through VZW site.)

Any functionality (or lack thereof) like that has already been defined and was implemented in the firmware at an early date. What you're going to see now is new firmware that simply makes the phone more stable.

Now, there are exceptions to the rule, but those come into play after the phone has been released. Rumor has it that the 710 will be able to be flashed to support EV-DO when it's rolled out later this year or early next year.

If you mean the Flash & Flex updates (the OS & other software) it's always free at the VZW store. AS for your paranoia on VZW making a profit... chill out and put your foil hat back on so the aliens don't steal your thoughts, or God forbid a for profit company that has stocks that pay dividends to stockholders might make a profit and give that profit back to the share holders! Geeez.

Dude, it's just good business:
* It fixes bugs that otherwise reflect poorly on Verizon and the phone you just purchased
* They rarely actually add new features, most especially features that require new licensing agreements (i.e. replacing WAP 1.0 with WAP 2.0) So there's no signifigant incremental cost to u...
