Yes... you can record long videos when using the memory card and only 15-second videos with just the phone... and not exactly sure bout the second ques.

FWIW, Jameskk on HOFO just got a Transflash card with the SD adaptor. He hasn't played around with it much, but does report that you can't use it to transfer ringtones to the phone. He's usually pretty good about reporting his experiences with his 710, so it might be worth monitoring this thread:
