Yesterday, there was a thread about airplane friendly phones. I hadn't heard of that before, however, today I came across the following article and thought it might be of interest here:

That reminds me, I was going to post this too but forgot. Nice find. It's an abridged version of the article though. You can find the full article at http://www.usatoday.com/tech/wireless/2004-07 -16-jet-phones_x.htm

I fully read the USA Today article at work. There were many parts of it missing from the Yahoo version. To verify, I copied the text only of both into Word and used the Word Count tool. Yahoo version 482 words. USA Today version 697.

Not trying to argue, but just want fellow forum readers to know that to get the full message of the article read the USA Today version as the Yahoo one i smissing about 30% of it.

I hate to say it, but think of the noise of people yapping on their cell phones as it is now everywhere you go - movie theatres, restaurants, trains, etc. - can you even imagine the cacophony of 150 people screaming to be heard over a 767? DANG. Next you'll have airfights because half the cabin wants to watch the movie while the other half wants to sit with their windowshades open & screaming on their cell phones. Like being on a plane isn't horrid enough these days.

Personally, I don't see this going too far, though I would *love* to be able to use my phone for data on the plane.

I posted the original post, and an airplane friendly option. the whole idea is that you can use other functions while the phone part is turned off. Specifically I would like to use the mp3 player on the plane, but that won't be allowed because the RF(radio frequency) is turned on. An airplane mode is designed to turn off the RF part.

Right. 🙂 I was interested in both threads, but I still shudder at the idea of everybody using voice comms on planes. One of the reasons I think it hasn't come up yet is that very few people in my experience actually use the AirFone service (though I'm not a platium class frequent flier, so maybe I'm wrong).
