Is this phone worth $500+ without a contract?

Even though this is the only bluetooth phone that Verizon will currently have I'm not sure it is worth the money. It seems that the only way to buy this phone is with NE2 and a rebate. At this point with the GSM competition catching up it does not make sense to sign up for 2 more years. If you look at the competition you can get a bluetooth phone for a much more reasonable price and the plans are the same or cheaper also.

Right. Because for many of us, GSM coverage isn't any better than no coverage at all; Verizon knows this, so they can (and do) charge a little more. It's a well-camouflaged monopoly... 😎

Nope, the phone isnt worth $520 out of contract. Add with tax of up to 8.25%, and you have $562. That is $562 based on a guess as to whether the phone is a stud, or a dud like the T720. But he question is a personal one depending on many factors, including how much you value mobile phones, how much you need the functions of this particular phone, how much you need to be seen with this phone, and how long you can wait for it to be reduced in price.

This phone is very much worth the cost. The amount of features it has and the fact it is on the #1 network definitely justify it. In no way shape or form is GSM catching up with CDMA in its current form. In the end as GSM turns into WCDMA and we see more EV-DO and EV-DV networks then we will see true competition. For now Verizon's network has 41 million people on their network, an increase of 4 million in one year as the combined AT&T and Cingular are down to 43 million, I wonder what catchup you can call that, cause it definitely isn't Heinz.

When I referred to catching up, I was referring to GSM coverage getting better and better. There is no doubt that CDMA right now is the way to go. But what happens in a year or so? Nobody really knows. One of the biggest reasons this phone is highly anticipated is because of the bluetooth. For the people that are just interested in bluetooth and not necessarily the rest of the features on this phone it is not a good value. Verizon needs a bluetooth phone that is more affordable for the general public. When someone is shopping for phones that have bluetooth they look for the coverage that fits them best, then the phone that fits them best. You can get GSM phones for $100 with a contract that have bluetooth. I just don't think this ph...

Try comparing the full price of other phones, and it is very much worth it.

I think this is the phone many Verizon users have been dreaming about. Subsequently, they are building it up in their minds to be more than it is, and ignore that the phone could be a technical bombshell/nightmare. From the reviews of many testers, the phone is totally overrated, and runs second to the LG VX7000. They may have fixed something with the new updates, but it is still too risky just to throw down $560 and not be sure. I would wait, let the reviews pour in, let the price stabilize, and then make a decision.

LG has no speakerphone and no Bluetooth and is digital only. For me those things make the 710 a far and away better purchase for me.

I wouldn't pay $520 for it though. I have my NE2 with re-up which will make it $150.00 after rebate for me. A solid investment if you ask me.

That's exactly the position I am in. So if you ask someone who can buy the phone for $150 if $520-560 is worth it, most would probably answer in the negative.

The LG is obviously far less functional, but it may be that the LG is superior in one aspect over the Motorola: reception.

Assuming the availability of analog coverage is not determinative in your decision making process.

That's why I'm going to get the phone. I've been nursing a 60c for too long, and my driving patterns require me to have analog coverage, as well as digital.

I may bite the cost bullet and only sign up to a 1 year contract, though.

Or you could buy it from Verizon the day it is released, use it for a couple of weeks, and if you don't like it take it back to VZW within the 15 day "Worry Free Guarantee" peri...

First of all you can't go by the testers 1. because the testers get the phone with a lot of bugs. 2. You would mainly hear about the bugs, because there is no use in reporting things that work. It also depends on the buyer. If you have a well paying job and you are resoposible then you can probably find the room to buy it. How much is breach of contract? Is $breech+$250 less than $510 ?? Thirdly if you need the features for bussiness use than its worth it.

Terminate your service pay the breech of contract, and sign a 2 year for the discounts.
I looked it up breech of contract is $175. So 175+250=425 savings of $85 before tax. I'm not clear on where the $70 rebate applies to full price. So if it applies to the full price than its only a savings of $15. Just a thought good luck.

P.S. sorry no spell check on last post

If you were to cancel your service and sign up again, you would lose your phone number. If you try to activate new service, then call Verizon and have the number changed, they will just list you as an existing customer, give back the $175 and charge you full retail for the phone. It doesn't work. You have a better chance of calling them and complaining and getting your upgrade date pushed up.

Do you know this as fact or is that just a speculation, because I know that verizon wireless does not have an AI system. Once a new account is started the account number is new and that is what the computer sees. Plus I'm not saying to try it behind Verizon's back. Go right up to an associate and tell them thats what you want to do. I don't know of anything that would prevent you from doing that.

P.S. If you want to try this around your billing date.

If someone had an accout with Verizon and payed the $175 to cancel it, their name is still in Verizon's system for...I believe the time frame is 90 days. So when the person tries to run credit for a new account, their social security number will show them as an inactive existing customer. What you could do is add a line to your existing account, while it's still active. Buy the phone at discount through that line. Then cancel your old phone line and tell Verizon you want to transfer that number to your new line.

Personally, I think that this is going to be a great phone. If Mot delivers another stinker to VZW (ala the T720) it will not make their investors very happy, and these investors are paying close attention to this phone. The CEO eve...
