Come on! Let's all using some business logic here:
VZW is a service provider, they don't make make profit on the phone unless every phone they sale is under retail price. In fact, they have to commit certain large amount of production to Motorola, just be able to have this phone released on their network. To recover such investment, they need to make sure there are as many as NEW subscribers and existing ones will sign the service on VZW network.

Ahh, but there's good profits to be made on accessories still. But that may be adjusted for already, based on the deals that RS can't offer but VZ can and the actual cost to VZ vs. RS.
