1, that the file has to be less than 1 mb, which it sounds like you've already got figured out.
And 2, that you have to reencode the .mp3 and reduce the bitrate to 64 kbps before you rename it as a .mid and send it.
Ringtone ripper will reduce the bitrate for you, but it also cuts the mp3 to 20 seconds. I don't know if there's a way around that, but if there is I didn't find it. If you want to change the bitrate withough cutting the length down you can use a program called razorlame. It took me about 10 minutes to create and send a ringtone after I figured this out.
And how do you make the song shorter, so you don't send the same thing.

First you are best off DL the File ITunes the free version you don't need to pay for the full version. Then once you have done that go to prefrance and change the converting bitrate to 64 (You will have to go to Custom to do this) and make shore it is set to convert to MP3. Once you have done this it all depends on what you are trying to do. If you want a full song I recomend keeping the file under 1mb, if you are just looking to make a Ringtone then you want to shorten the song to 25 to 30 sec.
