With this phone, can you use an email service w/o signing up for mobile web 2.0 from verizon? Or do you need mobile web still?

I signed up for mobile web, although it doesnt work yet. I get server down errors. However, I went to the Get It Now this morning and downloaded the SodaPop mail application. It's $2.50 per month and you accept it over the phone. You can get up to 5 mail accounts with it including regular free hotmail and yahoo pop mail or other pop enabled mail services. I dont think you can get regular yahoo on it though. I just connected my hotmail account today and it works pretty well. Easy to setup. Only thing I dont like is the advertisement at the bottom of the email you send the recipient. It states:
