Hey all,
So, I have the a580, and its a p.o.s., and I've only had it for 6 months now. So I can't upgrade.

I want to know if any one here has had any problems setting up a new line to avoid that $175 fee for buying a phone outside of your upgrade period, by adding a new line to your account, and then canceling it the very next day?

I used to tell people to do this all the time when I sold Sprint phones, I just want to know if Verizon has any safe guards against such practices... Let me know. Thanks

i added a line, but will keep it for three months until my other line is out of contract...then i will cancel and switch the numbers....the perfect plan.

I then counted as a new customer, since it is technically a new line!! Only 20 bucks more per month for three months!!

Just call Verizon and bitch that your phone sucks and you want to upgrade early. They will note your account so you can get the upgrade price on a new phone.

What $175 fee? If you're referring to the cancellation fee, that's only if you cancel the account. You can always purchase a new phone and add it to an existing account. Usually, you can even get promotional pricing by re-upping and signing a new 2 year contract.

I meant the $200 fee, which they charge if you are not eligible for the upgrade. For example, how the phone will cost me $520 at radio shack to upgrade, but only $320 if i add a line.

I can't speak for Radio Shack, but in my experience at VZW, if you re-sign a 2 year contract, you typically can get the new user promo pricing. What you won't get is the additional $100 NE2 credit....

The is only if you've had service for a year, and if you raise your plan and sign a new two year.

I was told by an alleged supervisor at VZW that I cannot sign up for another two years if I still have a year to go on my current contract. He claimed it was against federal law to sign anyone to a phone contract for longer than two years at a time. Can anyone verify this?

He is probably right, The difference is you are not extending it an additional 2 years: you are signing a new contract, substituting 2 years for the 1 year.
