Changing .mp3 to .mid does work, but...

But there are caveats...

When you change the extension to .mid on you comp. you will probably get an invalid file format type warning. This is because you're not actually changing the format type, just the extension.

You can then email the file to [email protected]. The phone should play the audio file when the email is opened on your phone. Mine played them automatically when i chose to read the email. You can then save it, etc.

Many mail servers do not allow mp3 files. VZWPIX or yours could be doing it. In my case it was my mail server. VZWPIX might not allow you to email mp3s to yourself because of A) size of the file and B)they want you to buy their mp3's.

So far i've emailed myself about 15 mp3's (small at 64k rate) ...

To add to the last part...

The txt file is usually from the server that blocks the mp3. Open the text file on your phone and see who the sever is.

I don't use iTunes so i'm not sure on that, but iTunes is probably looking for the .mp3 ext. Try switching it back to mp3, and it should play in iTunes.
You just want to switch it to .mid to email. The phone will read it as an mp3 even with the .mid ext.

where are you emailing it from? Using an ISP or a generic email, like hotmail, yahoo, etc?

I ALSO tried to email myself a midi file (leanbk.mid) from yahoo to no avail! I even changed the name in DOS!!! STILL, cannot email it to myself.

Picture messaging is on because I've gotten them before. Just not a song. And will this .mid file work if I send through hotmail? How can I make sure in yahoo mail that its a text message, not html?

Hmm, i just emailed a midi file from my Yahoo acct and it worked. However there was a text file attached as well. The midi was there though. This may sound obvious, but did you scroll donw to see if there were any attachments besides the .txt file?

Yes of course! And did you rename the file as xxx.midi or xxx.mid?

My error says:

yahoo works fine for me, make sure you downsample the mp3 (i reencoded @ 96kbps) to reduce the file size and the clip needs to be less than 30 seconds i'm pretty sure (the phone only rings for about 25 seconds anyway so anything longer would just be a waste of memory anyway)

Should I have some text in the message like test? I've been leaving both the subject and the body blank with just the attachment.

Well, let me try it with something in there. Maybe for some stupid retarded Verizon reason, it matters!! Knowing them, they probably scan the message looking for just attachments so that they can block them somehow I think.. lets see.. thanks though..

That kind of makes sense. Without any content the servers could think it's spam or a virus.

Did you resample it to less than 96kb? Also, from another post just discovered, you need to put something in the subject and body along with the attachment.

Ok...I really don't underestand what I am doing wrong. I right clicked a song on walmart.com.

I clicked save target as and saved it to my music folder as an .mp3. Then in the folder I converted it to a .mid and attached it to an e-mail via yahoo mail. I added a subject and stuff to the body and when I received the message on my phone and tried to play the song...it said system error. Will someone please explain what is wrong with my ways?

THis might sound kinda silly, but are you actually changing the file extension, or just adding .mid at the end of the filename? Cuz you gotta make sure that you change the extension completely. If not, the mail server is gonna think its still an mp3 file. Make sure you have the option to show file extensions in your folder options. Then rename it. Otherwise, your gonna end up with a file named XXXX.mid.mp3 get what i mean?

yea i'm using the itunes method and have no problems, how big is your file size? i just sent a 30 second clip to my phone that wouldn't work previously by downsampling to 80k instead of 96kbps and now it works, so i guess the limit is on the size of the file, not the length of the clip (i'm guessing the limit is around 350-400k so if your file is bigger than that you need to make it smaller)...good to know i guess

also i just discovered that id3-2 tags cause some problems so check the id3 info and remove the id3-2 tag if there is one, id3-1/tagless have worked fine for me

i use winamp (my default mp3 player) to disable them...itunes on the other hand doesn't seems to use id3-2 as default, but i'm not sure since i'm not too familiar with the program...

but if you use winamp just click info when your playing the file and uncheck the box for id3-2 if it is checked, thats all

the walmart (or the like) version works the best in my opinion, they fade the song for you, and all you have to do is rename the .mp3 to .midi, use your own email client (outlook, etc) attach the .midi, add subject and some text in the body, and send to your [email protected] address..worked on the first try for me!

what is the file size and clip length that you are trying to send?

the first 2 files i sent were 28 seconds each and around 350k...these worked fine

the third clip i made was 30 seconds and around 400k and my phone complained that it was an invalid file or something and wouldn't let me play or store it...i tried resending it about 3 or 4 times and i got the same error each time so i'm not sure if it was the length or the file size so try to keep it small...hope that helps
