ipaq - v710 hook up? can it be done???
this is something i would like to do as i am looking into PPCs but i have heard various rumors stating that you must purchase a data plan to be able to surf!? I don't get this. Is VZW looking to see what data transfers are happening on your acct?
Please clarify as I'll probably hit the local "terrible" Best Buy to see what IPAQ's they carry. According to various people on the web they do not carry any IPAQ's anymore (ones with windo...

i met some guy at the mall (in passing) who was using an ipaq with his v710 so I had to ask him "how it works". Well the guy didn't want to say much except that he bought "the last real ipaq from best buy....you can no longer get them....blah blah" but i noticed he was surfing the web with his ipaq.

i just called three stores in my area and all of them either said, "What's an ipick????" 🙄 or "we no longer carry those pocket pcs things" ?????? 😳
uh, Best Buy no longer carries Pocket PC's??? great. maybe i woke the sales guy & girls up. They obviously did not want to check for me as they all of them said, "Can't you just come in and look for yourself".
damn best buy!
So looks like i'm out of luck. Called CompUSA and again they do not carry IPAQ's. The girl said to try their website... ugh, i take it Pocket PC's are not the thing to buy huh...

Most people I know who have become proficient at both Pocket PCs and Palms prefer the PPCs... And now I sit back and wait for the flaming to start... 😁
I would suggest looking online for a, Ipaq 4150 -- It's a REALLY popular one (I have almost no complaints abount mine). I agree about the 1715; it's the first of a whole new line of PPC's from HP -- It's bottom of the line, and isn't worth it.
Check out Dell... I know a lot of people who have those, and really like them.
In any event, you can do...

maybe i can purchase the abused display model for a huge discounted price... but i'd be afraid the thing is broken... do you think it would be wise just to buy the display model and just try it out for 30days and then return it and buy a brand new one form somewhere else? i just want to see if this is a tool that i can REALLY use and have fun with. My main goal is to surf the web, check email, MP3's, watch vids. what do you think?
Don't do it... You want to buy one new and undamaged. Do you know ANYONE that has one?
As far as email goes, it's great! I don't like to surf too much on non-WAP sites, as it's not too speedy (I'm used broadband). I use it all the time when I'm on air...

Here's a link to how I connect (It's pretty basic):
http://www.pdastreet.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&th ... »
As far as getting on line, I started by using the built-in internet explorer. It works well, but I started using Netfront, which I found works a little better.
I use the built-in Email program for emails.
The connection just uses minutes; no extra.

You can get them for less than $390 if you look on pricegrabber...
As long as you can't use your BB card, why spend the extra?

The 4155 for $400 isn't bad -- I thought you said it was $450. I'd take a 4155 over a 2215 any day. The 2215 is larger and doesn't have WI-FI built in. I guess there's a bit of trade-off, as the 4155 doesn't have a CF slot (only an SD slot).. So you can always buy a CF WI-FI card for the 2215... It's just not as easy a solution.
i'm going in a few to check it out. i guess maybe i can use the old evil credit card 😈 to finance it for now... got to make someone richer!
i can't wait to sync up my v710 to an IPAQ.

Don't forget -- You CAN'T synch those two -- You can only us ethe phone as a modem and use the PDA contacts to dial the phone.
Again main function would be to surf the 'net and be able to access my personal email. I would use the other tools to some extent but not as much.
I guess I am sick of Mobile Web as I find it annoying that you can not view HTML. Seems like a waste.
When using the v710 to connect to the 'net do you ever experience any "drop outs" where you have to re-sign in, etc..? How is the speed (using regular mins vs. express network).
Thanks again!

ok... just to make sure my main goal with the IPAQ 2215 or 4155 is to be able to surf the internet like i can at work or at home. Other goals would be to use it as an MP3 player to listen to my fave tunes. Watching vids would be a plus but not needed.

No, from what I understand I am using the National Access Plan -- Minutes of use billing.
As far as what everyone else says, I am not sure...

I just bought the 710 myself and have an Ipaq 2215. I was able to pair up the two, but it seems that when I log onto the ISP, I receive a message stating that the account or password information is incorrect. When I check back on the Ipaq, it seems that the password has been erased even though it was saved before. Do you have any idea why this would happen?
Thanks!
Buzz
Yes-- It seems to only save it when you have a successful connection.
Are you using the username [email protected]
And the Password
vzw
joey
I am guessing from what you are saying that I can't use the standard service to dial into my ISP and get e-mail. I am not sure why this would not work, but...
If you have any idea, please let me know.
Thanks.

Of course when I went to Circuit City they did not have the 4155 in stock (it is $400). They only had a 2215 DISPLAY model for sale for $300. Did not come with anything! So they told me to drive an hour to the store that had 2 in stock but i decided to hold off as I am still unclear on some points regarding this issue. Thanks for your help guys!

I wish I could tell you. I can't log on at all using the Ipaq 2215. It should work the same as the 4155, but everytime I try to log onto my ISP, I get a message stating that the user name or password is incorrect. When I check the settings on the Ipaq, I find out that the password is no longer entered (even though it was saved there).
What do you mean by "my isp"? -- Aren't you simply using Verizon for the isp?
What name and password are you using?
Have you contacted VZW data support?
npitlor* do you have a data plan as well as your voice plan?
motocrazy8 said:

No data plan -- Just minutes
I have seen various threads in different places saying that people were able to connect directly to other ISP's, but I can't seem to do it.
Thanks.

Actually, I am trying to use the phone simply as a modem. I don't have the data plan. I am trying to connect to a dial-up ISP (so I am using the name and password for the dial-up ISP and don't have one from VZW).

No no no no no no no -- Don't try to connect to your dial-up (or any other) ISP -- Use your v710 and Verizon as your isp when you are connecting.
I've posted instructions for this LOTS of times.
Here's one I posted recently:

Go through the steps -- I am 99.9% sure that you will be able to get it to work.
Thanks! I found your thread and stepped through everything. It is working like a charm. It will save me lots of time.
Greatly appreciated. By the way, they did not know how to do this at the Verizon Wireless Store.
Take Care.

I'm glad it worked for you. Have you tried dialing the phone from your contact list? -- just tap and hold a contact, and select "Dial via Bluetooth".
None of the store folks receive Data training; they all have the data tech support phone number handy, though.
By the way, are the minutes charged as part of your package (ie 1200 minutes per month) or separately as an additional billed item.
Thanks!

Each data session shows up as a phone call. I believe that it says "data" on the call line in the bill.
They are simply treated as part of your monthly minutes package.
what is the major difference between the
4155 vs 2215 ??
It seems both models are being phased out / discountinued. But prices vary strangely. Such as I've seen the 2215 for $400 and the 4155 for $400. Or 2215 for $380 and the 4155 for $450!?
Thanks, trying to make a decision soon...

From the Verizon site it looks like you need to have the National Access plan (voice+data) - 400mins for $55/mo to do what you say. It doesn't look the National Americas Choice plans include data service - 400mins for $40/mo. Can folks confirm which plan they have? I don't think this service is worth another $15/mo - I could get a dial up ISP for less than that.
Why do I bother?!?
I HAVE NEVER PAID FOR DATA!!!!!!!!!
Your PDA Will Work!!!
You Can Get WAP directly on your phone!!!
All For The Cost Of Just Minutes!!!
NO EXTRA CHARGES!!!!!!!!

THANKS!
Did you go through the setup I described?
Did you turn on Bluetooth on the phone AND pda?
Did you set up a partnership between the PDA and Phone?
Did you leave the extra dial string blank?
2- YES
3- I think so. How can i check.
4- Unsure about this one... how can i check?
thank u!
Tap that icon, and select "Bluetooth Manager".
Do you see "Motorola Phone" listed? if not, go through the steps to add the phone as a device.
To make sure your extra dial string is empty,
go to start/settings/connections tab/connections/manage existing connections
you should see "verizon Wireless" (or whatever you named it) listed. make sure it's selected, and tap "edit"
Next/next/advanced
Check the extra dial-string box -- make sure it's empty.
Don't worry -- We'll get you connected!
i noticed the password "vzw" changed??? why is that??? could this be a reason? well...
Here is what happens when I click on the "x" to the left of the speaker:
PDA says dailing #777 and v710 makes sound. Nothing happens on v710 end. Then another sound. Still nothing happens on v710 end. Then error msg on PDA stating unable to connect....blah blah.
i really appreciate your help !
What user name are you using?
If your v710 is making a noise (should be two tones -- a lower then higher set), your PDA and phone are talking. Before you start to try to dial, open up your phone, and watch what happens. Does the phone say dialing?
Yes tones are as you described. Nothing happens on phone.
When I intially tried it the phone said "dailing" and then connected at 14.? kbps but it hung up after 4 seconds. But i noticed at that time it was dailing "9#777" so I re-did everything.
Oh boy, i hope this works out, haha, i appreciate your time npitlor!
what did you redo?
Did you change the dialing rules? What is you baud rate set at? (under the "advanced" section of the setup procedure).
i remember i did change something in the dailing patterns. everything in there says "g"
boy its getting late - i may have to pick this up tomorrow morn but again i do appreciate ur help! 😁
maybe i should do a reset on the ipaq?
You could also set up another dialing procedure.
Let's call this quites for the night. I"ll be in the office from about 9 to 10 EDT, I can respond then, and then again from about 2 to 4:40.
If you don't mind, drop me a line (click on my name; you'll be able to send me an email)...
I hate to bother everyone else with this process...

Buzz-
Are you willing to step in to help Motocrazy8, too? I think you two have the same PDA.
There is one wslam dunk way to do it -- you do a backup of your settings (you can do this without your user data), and have Motocrazy8 restore that file to his PDA.
I bet its something to do with me changing the settings. I know at first I deleted every "g" but when re-reading the directions I was supposed to delete everything BUT THE G correct? Also i changed the area code to my location and then just put it back the way it was.
So i did a lot of tweaking, maybe I messed up the settings someway. I think a reset and a start from scratch might prove useful. Since my Ipaq 2215 is brand new, there is nothing saved on it so ...
Thanks again!
i did a soft re-set and now it connects BUT its a little buggy. Let me fool with this a little more. Oh and its kinda slow but then again I am use to cable...
i'll keep you informed guys and thanks so much for the advice!
BTW - when i sign on to VZW network, is there a way to clear cookies, history, etc...?

When the Internet Explorer is open, tap tools then options. You will find what you need there.
I would also suggest tapping "view" and unchecking "show images" -- It will make things run faster when you don;t need to see graphics.
also try this program:
http://www.access.co.jp/english/products/nf_mcs.html »
I found that it makes surfing go a bit faster, too -- and will allow you to load most pages with java.
thanks again for the info! u are a great help npitlor!

Yes, you can eliminate mobile web 2.0.
You don't even need that if you want to use the phone's browser(!)

Moto, call them and ask if it has to be credited to your brother's card. I'm not sure it does, since it is supposed to be a gift. There is no reason that you should have to use the cash at Best Buy. My daughter has returned several gift cards at different locations. They're never really happy, but you should have the right. Say you received a book as a gift and you already have it, do you have to keep it, just because it was bought with a credit card? Try it, what can it hurt? And I won't even tell your b...
