Outgoing e-mail server for Cingular?

Hi All,

I used to use the Audiovox SMT 5600 on AT&T's network, and had the e-mail client set-up to do my cablemodem's pop/smtp e-mail. Everything worked great- it received mail from my cablemodem's POP server, and I used the "pdasmtp.attwireless.net" smtp server for all outgoing mail.

Now I have the Moto MPx220 through Cingular and am trying to set it up to do the same. I have successfully set up the e-mail service on the phone to receive mail from my cablemodem's POP server, but no one at Cingular knows what SMTP server I should use for outgoing mail.

I can't send through my cablemodem's smtp server because I'm not logged in there (their restrictions) and the previous attwireless.net server doesn't work now that I've migrated ove...

I finally got a return call from Cingular tech support re: this issue. His answer was to use the text messaging application and enter a standard e-mail address instead of a phone number, and that would send a message via e-mail. Didn't work, but I didn't find that out until after we hung up.

After a substantial amount of digging, I finally found the cingular smtp server and it appears to be working. For anyone interested, setup the e-mail in your smartphone using your ISP's pop server, and for the smtp server, use "photo.mycingular.com".

I've successfully sent mail from my phone and the resulting e-mail looks like it came from my normal cablemodem account. Woohoo!

BTW, with the appropriate data plan (I have the $40/month-ish unlimited plan), you can pretty much browse to any web site that doesn't do frames, javascript, or anything funky. Anything else is OK, but may not look great on the screen ;-)

And are people who are not sbc/yahoo customers able to receive emails that you send from your phone?

yeah, it works fine to and from people with and without sbc/yahoo email addresses. does it work b/c cingular is in the boat with sbc? if it were some other isp would it not work with their smtp server?

You make a good point about Cingular being a part of SBC. I have Charter and when I used their SMTP server only other Charter members received my email. All other addresses never received my emails.

Why? Because my ISP (Time Warner Cable) does not allow use of their SMTP (outgoing) mail server unless you're sending from within their network (on your cable modem or their companion dial-up).

did you need a userid and password for this server? and if so where do you register to get the authentication info.

thanks
