This is a real newbie question but what's the difference between "connected at 230kps" and "dial up . . . connects at 45kps?"

Is the first the transfer rate when you use the phone to surf the web and the 2nd when you use it as a modem?

no im using the cable that came with the mpx220...but if you have a bluetooth enabled laptop you dont need a cable. and anyone could do this with any plan, but with the unlimited usage, you're not charged per kb.

and the difference between 230 and 45 is just the bandwidth and connection rate. how many kilobytes you connect at per second. dial up is about 45, dsl usually ranges from 400-1000 depending where you are, and cable usually ranges at about 1500-3500. so, i was suprised at mpx connecting at 230, because that's almost as good as some dsl. it's usually the more kbps you have the faster your internet is, but if you have a cable connection at 3000 and one at 2000 you won't be able to tell the difference, because no server is going to ...

Slightly off-topic:

When I first signed up with Cingular and my MPx220, they didn't know which data plan to give me. They initially had me on the unlimited Blackberry plan for $45/month. I was having some connectivity issues after about 2 weeks and called in to tech support. At that time, they reasessed things and switched me over to the MEdia Works unlimited plan which has been working fine ever since.

My first Cingular bill arrived last week and I discovered that when they switched me over to the MEdia Works plan, all of my prior 2-weeks worth of data usage that had been on the Blackberry plan revereted to pay-as-you-go data. That little snafu resulted in over $100 of data usage fees for the 2 weeks prior to switching to the MEd...

"and the friendly customer support person refunded every penny of that $100 in data access fees"

nice...i just got my phone and signed up with cingular a week ago...they're not the most competent people, but they are very understanding and sensible.

This phrase is confusion. Can someone please clarify this for me? If I surf the web with my phone using the cable... will I be charged anything, if I don't have the unlimited usage plan?

you can use ur phone as a modem w/ no mediaworks plan...HOWEVER, you will be charged per every kb or mb downloaded.

also, i just got a kensington bluetooth adapter from bestbuy for my PC and I accessed internet through my phone on my PC WIRELESSLY. very nice, indeed. only problem is that the bluetooth only transfers at like 120kbps and the 220's net connection is 230kbps...so, through bluetooth, the data rate is almost cut in half...still very cool though

I've seen all the traffic about this being cool...but can you tell me (in detail) how to actually get the thing to work as a modem? I use the USB cable (for now). I have a data connect plan (and Media Works), but I can't get it to work. I've tried using that Connection Manager software, but it won't even recognize the MPx220. The most success I've had is activating the modem link....but I never get a connection to the Cingular system. I have tried with and without the init string in the manual....I would really appreciate your secret. Thanks,Rick
