Official update regarding voice quality

Cingular has announced that the MPx220 has voice quality issues and will soon be working to replace or upgrade affected phones both in store inventories and phones already purchased. You may go to www.motorola.com/us/MPx220 to register to be notified when the upgraded software has been released. At that time you can either contact Cingular's Exchange by Mail program to replace your phone or use Motorola's online upgrade tool to upgrade your software. The effected software versions are: 0.325; 0.342; 1.30; 0.343; 1.03. Versions .343 and 1.03 are AT&T versions of the phone.

Out of curiosity, do you have any info on what the the firmware will fix, other than the volume issues?

After registering I noticed in the URL the name MPX220b. Do you know if this is only a firmware upgrade or hardware as well?

The memo said it was only software. I'm sure that it will fix more that just voice quality issues, but that was the only problem discussed. Also there are rumors circulating the office that if you wait and upgrade online through the tool Motorola will post then they will send you a free Bluetooth Headset for your troubles. I don't know all the details (when?, how?, which model?) on this yet but will post when I do.

I also have reception/sound problems with the MPX220 and have obtained a copy of this internal Cingular memo (released April 😎. It says the software release is scheduled for late May 2005.

It also mentions the free Moto Bluetooth Headset "to lessen the inconvenience of their audio troubles" but isn't very clear on how to get this. Apparently this is from Moto and not from your provider.

What I did was go to the site www.motorola.com/us/mpx220 and click on ContactUs and filed my complaint there. Also make sure you register to be notified when the update is released at this site.

According to the memo the update can be done via the provided online software update tool, or users can send in their phones for an exchange. I guess detai...

Does anyone know if (after this software update is made available to install) the MPx220 will require a hard reset?

That sucks if it does, 'cause I'll have to reinstall stuff like lextionary, and I'm not sure where the crap I put the unlock code to make the full program run 😡

I hope this upgrade fixes other glitches. Anyone think the camera will be improved, or is it just a bad lens?

I expect it will, as the last update required it.

ALL firmware updates require that you back up your data because it IS lost. Whether that happens in the update itself or the hard reset that follows it's gonna be lost.

Can some please tell me why Cingular support acts like they don't know anything about the problems with the MPX220? The same goes for Motorola when I contacted them directly. The MPX looked like an ideal phone for my wife and I and convinced me to switch from Verizon much to my regret. But all Cingular wants to do is sent me a replacement recon'd phone (the recon is worse than the first). Why should a consumer have to mention some secret code to get any assistance from Cingular. I have described numerous problems (all of which are documented here and other forums) with the phone and even supervisors act like I am the only 1 complaining

Those two companies should be embarrassed by the lack of knowledge that their helpdesks have. Motorola's is the absolute worse helpdesk I have ever called. Absolutely no one in their helpdesk has even seen an MPx220, much less have an idea what it can do. A couple months back I called them to ask about how to run Java programs on the phone. The incompetant person was insisting that all I needed to do was to copy the JAR file onto the phone and then click on it from File Manager Anyone who has an MPx220 knows that doesn't work. I kept escalating until I got a manager on the phone who finally admitted that they didn't even have a manual for the phone (much less the phone). It's clear their helpdesk has been outsourced overseas somewhere. ...
