okay i live about 30 min out of Chicago which is ev-do capable. I had to go downtown today for work, and figured while i was down there i would pick the phone up. Well after an hour of waiting for them to program my phone which was fine, but they made me buy an accessory pack for 50 bucks which made me irrated but i will call verizon tomorrow and complain and if it doesn't get me anywhere ill just return the stuff... anyways i get home and every time i tried to get videos and stuff it kept telling me the advanced network was unavailable. the whole time i have been home the little ev at the top has not been there... anyone else live outside of the main city and having this problem?? the 800 number was closed when i tried to call so i will ...

You don't HAVE to buy the accessory pack. If you were FORCED into buying go back and speak with the store manager.

This is a common practice (scam IMO). It's apparently blessed by corporate as ALL pricing labels in stores list prices like this:

phone 'xyz' 1 yr price 234.45
phone 'xyz' 2 yr price 123.45
accessory essentials kit 49.98
rebate 50.00
Your price-after rebate 1 yr) 234.43
Your price after rebate (2 yr) 123.43
I've had SOME reps tell me it's REQUIRED also. I think this needs to be forcibly challenged by the buying public. Sure you can return it w/in 15 days but why go through the hassle?

It's quite obvious these access. kits are large profit items for the stores. Comments?

well they called the manager and the store was told that they could not sell the phone without the kit... i even said that is fine ill buy it off the internet and the sales rep said that would probably be smart for me to do since its pointless to buy all those but she had to sell them to me... worst of all since the battery was barley charged when buying i went to use the car charger and she gave me the one for the 6000 🙂 oh well i will call verizon today and see why i am getting no service for ev-do.. thanks for the replies

I bought the phone yesterday and I was not "forced" to buy the kit. They didn't even try to sell it to me.

In fact, they didn't even want to sell me the phone. I walked into the store, told them I wanted to upgrade and that I knew I had to pay full retail price for the phone, and they told me that because the account was not in my name (even though I am shown as the only user on the account and I could verify ALL account information) they would not let me leave the store with the phone. Even if it was not activated.

I had the same problem with them forcing me to buy the package. My rep in Ohio didn't even ask me about it, he was including it in the final price. Like I said in my review, it was like buying something off the streets of NY where they add something when you're about to leave. I thought it was pretty funny because don't mind dealing with that crap, but unprofessional 😉 Still, I don't have to deal with them for another 2 years. Think about it, most of the stores won't be able to make money off you for another 2 years, so they'll try to push the accessories as well as a service plan 😛

This is why I can't understand why VZW will not allow us to do 'early upgrades'?? You'd think VZW would want us to buy phones more frequently!

I like the Plantronics Headset. How is the Jabra? Not the bluetooth Jabra, the wired one. What headset is best?

Well, one came with the phone and that one is not too bad. I have the plantronics with the flexible mic and it works fine for me. I have no experience with jabra, so I cannot speak on that one.

Mine had the same problems you describe yesterday also. I called VZW and they said they were having network problems. I live the Phoenix, AZ area. It did that for a few hours now works great.

I work for a dealer selling verizon wireless. and used to work for corporate. verizon gives quotas to there employees to sell accessories.
they have also sold (the corporate employees) some customers accessories that have come in our dealer store for us to review the bill with them and accessories that the customer did not even know they had purchased. watch out for the corporate ones. its high and tough fighting for who makes the most $$$$. go to a dealer, they usualy have more time to take with the customers and many times you can work out a price much better with them on the phones and accessories. just ask.... not the mass retailers such as radio shack, etc. i mean the small guys.
good luck.
