Nokia Rep stopped by - CONCRETE ANSWERS about Verizon

Nokia rep stopped by yesterday with a non-functioning mock-up of this phone, along with some information.

THE FACTS (per the rep):

- This phone will be released by the end of July - probably within the next two weeks.

- This phone will NOT BE SOLD in Verizon coporate stores - ONLY third party retailers like Best Buy, RadioShack, etc.

- This phone will feature UNRESTRICTED BLUETOOTH. Yes, you read that correctly. Bluetooth has not been crippled on this phone. At all.

- This phone WILL NOT have an MP3 player. The rep explained Verizon requested the MP3 player be removed. Bummer eh?

- This phone is being sold into verizon at ~$200 a phone. Considering Verizon's rebates for new customers, this phone will probably be very ...

Good stuff, but I have a hard time believing that the Bluetooth won't be restricted. VZW has been rather stubborn about that, unfortunately. ☚ī¸

Well you have to realize to Verizon that not having OBEX isn't crippled its revenue ensurement and within their right. Either way I personally rather have the mp3 player since I don't use bluetooth and really now what is the point of having bluetooth to transfer pics and vids hardly seems worth when my cheap digi camera takes better pics. Oh Well I really don't get Verizon's decision making skills.

Why would they only release it to 3rd party retailers???

Is there a precedence for them doing that with other phones?

Probably for money.

Other Nokias for Verizon? Not that I'm aware of. But for other Verizon phones, sure. Both the Motorola V260 and Samsung A570 are Radio Shack exclusives, for example.

To me, it kinda sucks... what if there's a phone I really want, but I have to go through Radio Shack to get it? What if I *gasp* don't like Radio Shack??? đŸ˜ŗ

Actually though, the v260 was just the counterpart to the v265 that verizon officially sold. I don't know about the a570, but releasing a phone that doesn't have a counterpart in verizon's lineup is rather odd.

A common one that VZW got that was in very few if any stores was Sony Ericsson T61c.

Since it had Bluetooth VZW did not want it and almost every modle was sold to wireless agents and in the stores. Support from VZW for the phone was almost none for get-it-now and other features. I hope they don't do that with this phone. đŸ˜ĸ

Not exactly. The V265 had a camera, the V260 didn't. That's an important distinction for a lot of ppl.

🙄 It's completely irrelevant how import one feature was, it was still practically the same phone for verizon - like comparing the Treo 600 with camera to the Treo 600 without camera - it's not a huge headache to support both.

But the consumer doesn't see it that way.

If it was something like one phone has a To Do List, and the other doesn't, and otherwise the phones are exactly the same, I would agree with you. But camera/no camera is a big deal.

Case in point, my friend is going to be switching from Sprint to Verizon. She asked me what phones I thought might be good, adding emphatically, "I want a cameraphone." That alone disqualifies the V260 from her purchase list, even thoug...

Ok....look, I think you just didn't understand what I meant in my post. What I meant, was that for some indirect dealer like radio shack to be allowed to sell a phone for verizon that verizon doesn't have a counterpart of seems very odd. Although you friend might feel that having a camera is a make or break deal, it's probably not a big deal in terms of supporting the phone for verizon - the v260 and v265 probably have similar firmware, identical menu's, identical glitches, etc etc...

well it is possible that the phone will have a counter part. There were rumors floating around that the vzw people actually wanted 6235i the but the guys at nokia would not allow its release unless they also released the 6255i and taking out the mp3 seems to take out one of the 6255is advantages.

Wouldn't releasing the 6255, in any form, even as only a 3rd party exclusive, satisfy Nokia's requirement of, "Well, if you want the 6235, you gots to take the 6255 also"?.

If so, there would be no Verizon corp store counterpart phone. Of course, this is all just speculation. 😕

Oh, I understand what you're getting at, I'm simply saying that from the point of view that I actually care about (the consumer), the V260 and V265 aren't truly counterpart phones. VZW marketing probably doesn't consider them counterparts either, for obvious reasons ('ok, we'll give some low-end non-camera phone marketshare to Radio Shack in exchange for 'X' amount of dollars'...)

Also, the distinction seems less meaningful when, as you noted, phones with no counterpart like the A570 are getting to be Radio Shack exclusives. Like I said earlier in the thread, what if I, as a consumer, want a particular Verizon phone that *only* Radio Shack offers? I'm then stuck with Radio Shack... not always a good thing, trust me. đŸ˜ŗ

What would be ...
