Is there a way to get the phone to just vibrate without sound or just turn the sound off

Hold down the * key and the phone will be in manner mode (vibrate).
To get the phone to go completely silent, press the volume buttons down on the left side until the display reads silent and wait for the screen to go back to the home screen. That should do it.
