Unlocking? Canadian Functionallity

Does anybody know if these can be unlocked like regular GSM phones? If so will these phones work on any regular GSM carrier within North America? I am very interested in getting my Sidekick to work here in Canada now that I have moved but I can't seem to find any info on this... PLEASE HELP so I know if I have a door stop or not .....
