Motorola V551, How do I know if I'm on EDGE or not?

Just successfully got my PDA (hp 2215) hooked up to my new v551 in order to surf the internet. It just seems to be a lot slower than I expected.

Is there anyway for me to tell definitively if I am on an EDGE network or not? I'm in Staten Island, NY.

I should also mention that I'm on Cingular Nation 600 with MEdia Works.

Go to the Cingular website. Click on rate plans, then click on data plans. Click on the map and it will show your coverage.

A Media Works plan will not let you use the high speed capability of the EDGE enhanced GPRS data transfer. Media Works is comparable to a 14.4 Kbps dial-up modem, very slow! The plan is intended to be used for WAP applications, although it will allow HTML, POP/SMTP, and some other limited internet features. If you want high speed connection you must purchase a Data Connect plan (Internet Express). They cost a lot more than a Media Works plan. Cingular is not stupid, they won't allow you to purchase a MediaNet plan at a fraction of the cost of a Data Connect and give you the same features and performance. Check out the website below, it explains some other differences between the two.

I can't take advantage of EDGE with the Mediaworks plan? Damn. That's the main reason I bought this phone -- to pair it, via bluetooth, with my IPAQ 4555 for net access.

Guess it's back to Wifi for my IPAQ. No point in creeping at 14.4k.

Anyone figure any network configurations that can get us full EDGE under mediaworks?

It can't be done. MediaNet is not a direct connection like Data Connect, rather it dials up the connection like a modem. I also have an IPAQ 4155 and I use bluetooth to connect to a V551. I have tried with a MediaNet and a Data Connect plan in an EDGE area - night and day difference. You can call Cingular and speak with a data connection technician and they can explain the differences between the two in greater. Like I said in my previous post, Cingular isn't as naive as we would like them to be. They are well aware that a customer could purchase an unlimited MediaNet plan for $19.99 and use it like a Data Connect plan instead of paying $79.99. Although you can surf the net, there are many things you won't be able to do and it will be...

Actually, wait a sec...

Both you (FoneLink) and that Navas Group page refer to Cingular's high-speed plans as "Internet Express" or "Wireless Internet Express".

Cingular says "Wireless Internet Express" is in my MEdia plan.

I'm totally confused again. 🤭

thats because wireless internet express or WIX is the cingular data network that allows GPRS.

EDGE is still GPRS. its really an enhancement to our already establised GPRS network. hope that helps.

OK, now I'm totally confused. The document you linked to talks about the differences between MEdia and Wireless Internet Express.

I am under the impression that Wireless Internet Express is the name for Cingular's GPRS/EDGE service. The document you linked to seems to confirm this.

The $20 MEdia Works plan to which I subscribe prominently features "unlimited Wireless Internet Express". This is confirmed in my bill, which lists "MEDIA WORKS-WIX".

Based on this info, I should have GPRS/EDGE access, right?

actually a mediaworks plan or any wireless internet express pkg will allow EDGE service(where avaialable), BUT it only allows such service while using your WAP device(meaing just your phone)

now we do also offer DATA CONNECT and PDA CONNECT packages which will allow phone+laptop and phone+PDA GPRS and EDGE(where avaialable) access.

for PDA connect we cingular only offers a 29.99 pkg with 5MB or the 39.99 unlimited. these packages are only allowed for cennectivity to PDA devices sold by cingular. from what i understand you have to have a PDA device obtained from cingular. as of now the only device allowed is the treo 600 and the upcoming treo 650.

i know we only offer direct support the cingular authorized devices but you might be able to use your own PDA but we will not be able to offer support if it doesnt work.

I was told by both a cigular store rep and a customer service rep that if I wanted to connect my iPAQ to the internet via my V551 phone I had to purchase a Data Connect Plan at $79.99 for unlimited transfer. I was not told anything about a PDA connect plan.

yeah this is right. the only way that a PDA connect plan can be offered is if you have a cingular offered PDA device. currently we only offer the treo 600.

How did you get your PDA to connect? I was using my IPAQ 2215 with my Sony/Ericson T216 using the dial string of *99# with cingular to connect, but I can't get internet with my V551 and Cingular hasn't been much help. Talked with the Data Services group and they gave me some dial up strings to use, but to no avail. Also, are you using the Media Net package or the Data Package?

I don't know if this makes any difference, but I used the dial string *99***#.

I'm using the MEdia Works package, which includes MEdia Net.
