I was wondering if I can send my own mp3's to the phone? or do I have to pick from the generic songs from the web sites?

Yes you can send your own mp3's to the phone. Either over bluetooth or USB Cable (both of which would be free and not charged) or over the Internet (which would cause you to get charged for bytes transferred).

I used some suggestions I found over on wap.rousso.net for mp3s if you used them as ringtones.

MP3 Ringtone Development Guidelines:
MP3 file sizes should not be any larger than 150K maximum. As a general rule Ring Tones should not be longer than 30 seconds because most carriers roll the call to voicemail after about 4 rings. Ring Tones longer than 30 seconds will just not be heard and waste valuable
