Mandatory Area Code

Does anybody know anything about the area code being required on every call on cell phones? I made several local calls over the weekend on my cingular v551, and it never even rang, it told me call could not be completed as dialed. Then i redialed with the area code and it worked just fine. Can somebody explain? Also, does anybody know if you can set the v551 to automatically dial the area code?

Thanks for the help

Are you using a phone number that is outside the local area code? When I moved from Norfolk, VA to Tampa, FL, my phone no longer functioned by just dialing 7 digits. If I dialied my Wife's phone (our old 757 area code), it wasn't local so I had to dial the 757 area code. If I dialed a local number (813 area code), I also had to dial the local area code.

Now I am buying new Motorola V551 phones (have 2 loaners right now) and changing from Sprint (which has LOUSY signal strength in Riverview, FL) to Cingular. Already I have better signal strength and the loaners aren't quad capable.

Well, my next thought would be to contact Cingular and ask them. I don't think it is the phone - it sounds to me more like the way the network is reacting to the phone, like it thinks it is from out of the area.

In either case, call them and see what they say. You should not have to dial the area code in your local area...

Good luck - make sure and post here if you get it solved.

I once had this problem, and after numerous answers I came across a wireless tech who said that the problem resides with the antenna and shared carrier that picks up you phone when you turn it on, or move from one area to another while you are using the phone.

If another carriers antenna, which many share, picks up your phone, it may want the area code of the phone number you want to dial, thus the problem.

I live on the edge of two antenna location, sometimes I get one antenna ant it does not require an area code, and the other does.

I was advised to always enter the area code if the regular number does not work AND when you enter the numbers into the phone book - always enter the area code first then the number. This also allows ...
