SIM & LOCKED/UNLOCKED

Recently, I switched from Verizon to Cingular and purchased a SE Z500a (pretty neat phone for the price). I plan to try it out, then maybe trade up and buy a S710a. If so, I'll keep the Z500a as a backup, to use in places where I don't want to take the more valuable S710a. I don't plan to get a second number, just a second phone.

If I want to switch between phones, is it just a matter of removing the SIM card from one phone and placing it in the other phone? Will the SIM card from my Z500a work in another brand of phone, e.g., Nokia?

Also, when I'm looking for another phone like the S710a, I assume that I need to buy one that is unlocked. What does that mean?

Please don't flame me for asking elementary questions. Thanks to y'a...

Yep, all you do is switch the sim card into the new phone to change phones. Nothing else.

No flaming this time 😉 LOL

Since you're a Cingular customer, you will not need to buy an "unlocked" phone. The only reason anyone would need to buy unlocked would be if someone who had an AT&T chip or a Tmobile chip wanted to be able to use this phone, which has software that is designed to allow Cingular chips only. An "unlocked" phone is basically one that has been hacked to that you could put any service provider's chip in it & it would work fine for you. All GSM companies have their phones locked for their chips only.

You WILL be able to simply switch your chip from one phone to another. I do this all the time. I've currently got a Moto v220 & a Nokia 3120 that I switch between quite frequently. I also put my chip ...

I am not sure I understand the unlock/lock scenario completely... but I am wondering, can the s710a be unlocked for Verizon? Verizon does have a GSM phone out right now (samsung), so I'm thinking maybe it can... anyone??

The Samsung a790 for Verizon doubles as a CDMA and GSM phone It even has a sim card.. My dad has it and used it for when he went to Europe last month. So since Verizon can do GSM it seems (or maybe GSM under a European country??) is it possible they can do GSM with the 710a??

The GSM chip in the Samsung A790 only works in Europe. In the US the phone is CDMA only.

Verizon wanted a world phone, and since 95% of the rest of the world uses GSM they had to support that standard in order to do it.

No, you can't use any other GSM phone on Verizon's network. The A790 isn't really a GSM phone, it's a dual tech phone that can use both types of networks.

I wasn't aware that Verizon had anything that was GSM.... To my knowledge they always have been & still are completely TDMA/CDMA.

At any rate, as a CDMA-based company, the S710a is not compatible with Verizon. If what you say is true & Verizon is using GSM in any capacity, then it is probably still in the experimental phase & will not be widespread enough for you to utilize it yet. Along the same lines, I doubt you could get a SIM chip from them at this time anyway.

Which Samsung GSM phone is it that Verizon has?

Samsung a790

check it out here at phonescoop

I think though the SIM card and GSM capability is only used when you go overseas to Europe (my dad went there last month and he was using GSM there, not CDMA)

So, maybe Verizon can use GSM (or maybe its only overseas, and Verizon is working with vodafone or some other company). Right???

It is not a true GSM phone. It is a CDMA and GSM hybrid. The CDMA works to pick up the Verizon network in the U.S, while the GSM portion of the phone can only be used while overseas, using an out of the country sim card or one purchased from our international phone services program. It will not ever work with another U.S carriers sim in it. And no... The S710 would never be able to operate on Verizon's network as we do not operate Any GSM towers in the country.

FYI an unlocked phone is not hacked, all you need is the code and you can enter it manually.at the end of a contract you can call in and get the unlock code,or you can use programs that will read it so you can enter it.or a clip that will unlock it
