Using Gmail from your S710a

Okay, it's not fully working yet, but I managed to get it to go further than anyone else has posted so far.

Right now my phone is "hung" on the "Receiving emails" screen. Which is better (I guess) than getting a TSL/SSL handshake error, right?

I managed to get past the TSL/SSL error by changing the domains to pop.gmail.com and smtp.gmail.com instead of the more logical gmail.com.

Other than that I just followed gmail's instructions.

Any idea for the next step? (Getting it to actually download instead of hanging?) Or is this the same place everyone else got stuck and I just missed the posts?

What did you put for your incoming and outgoing port numbers... IM at work now and cant get to gmails site, actually what do you have for all your settings, ive had a bitch of a time trying to get mail to work on the phone. Although i found out you can send pics via mms to email (which is all i really wanted email for), and i felt like quite the fool. 🤣

According to Gmail's instructions:

Incoming:
server pop.gmail.com
port 995
SSL enabled w/domain pop.gmail.com

Outgoing:
server smtp.gmail.com
port 465
SSL enabled w/domain smtp.gmail.com

Mailbox should be set to [email protected], not just your_account. Email address is also [email protected].

You also have to go into your Gmail settings and enable POP3 access. Don't forget to save the settings, too.

I tried sending an email from my phone and it failed, but at least when sending it didn't hang the phone. I had to take the battery off after the phone hung while doing a send/receive the first time.

If that doesnt work, try not using 465 on the outgoing port. gmail lists an alternate port, that starts with a 5...dammit let me get me phone and check... I walked all the way to my phone in the living room, checked it, sat down, and forgot it.... 587! thats the only way I could get it to work on my v3 everything else the same. I dont have the s710 YET, so I dont know if it is a phone issue or not, my that is just my experience.

Thanks!

I tried using port 587 for outgoing mail and the result was slightly different, but in the end it was still a "send failed". The only difference was that port 587 had to think about it longer before failing than port 465.

Both ports hang the phone if I do a send/receive just to check for mail.

Hey- I just spoke to the Cingular tech guy, who was more qualified for a software engineering company than a customer service at Cingular. Anyway, I haven't tried it yet since I don't have the info, but he also thought that the outgoing server name being truncated (smtp.gmail.co instead of .com) But he said that if we know the IP address of gmail outgoing server, we can replace it by the ***.***.com. Does anyone have that info?

Good Luck Getting the IP. I don't think they will want you to know that.....

Does anyone know if the phone really supports SSL? That could be the issue here.... If the server can't authenticate the phone over the secure connection, then it't not going to let you do anything. Has anyone tried anything else besides gmail? Im ust curious if it will work on others...
