I've been sorta thinking...

MAYBE instead of waiting to get the S710a, I'm thinking maybe I should wait until Cingular rolls out with the UMTS/WCDMA, and get one of those phones which will be capable with it. It's not all that too far off from being rolled out... What do you guys think? (Pyro, Joel, Disciple)

My guess is that you'll be waiting a year, so don't bother. Get your s710. Just b/c they *might* have utms/wcdma in 6 months or so doesn't mean that it will be available throughout the entire network. These kind of things take time. It would suck to pay major $ for a cutting edge phone that will only work on a fraction of the network. Besides - once utms/wcdma is available thru Cingular nationwide there will be more utms/wcdma phones to choose from & more competition amongst the phone manufactures, resulting in lower prices and better quality products. I'd be a bit skeptical of the 1st wave of utms/wcdma phones that the company releases.

Hmm, I never thought about it like that. It makes complete sense though.

Looks like S710a it is. 😁

Thanks for your input Adam! 😎

Yah, more likely than not is they will have it up in one metro area in 6 months and then slowly roll it out over the next year after that. So you'd probably be waiting for awhile.

I was just thinking about how, if you look at all the "soon to be released phones" that are heralded on the home page here @ PS, everything is cdma/gsm still, & many of those we we probably won't see until the end of the year. (yes, I know... that was a run-on sentence... I don't care 😛 )

Yeah, good point, I just had the wrong mentallity about the whole UMTS thing, like it'd be nationwide soon, I didnt put into consideration that it's going to slowly get deployed.

I wouldn't think that there'd be a problem with the phones though, I mean, UMTS is already overseas so the phones and all wouldnt be all that new, but I guess working on a different UMTS frequency would make some sort of difference? 😕

There shouldn't have been much delay to the S710 either since it's so much like the S700....but look what happened there.

My guess from the complaints and problems people have experienced here would be bluetooth issues.

Actually, AT&T rolled out UMTS briefly before it became Cingular. I know it was in Seattle, San Fran, and Orlando. There was only 1 Motorolla phone that was able to use the UMTS and it was only in some major cities. The streaming video was pretty good.

I'd go ahead and get the S710a now and then plan to upgrade later.

After all, by the time UMTS is widely available (not just in 20-30 cities) you'll be hearing about HSDPA "coming soon" and want to wait for that. It could be an endless cycle of always waiting.

When you get right down to it, the S710a is toward the front end of EDGE releases, so you can count on it being "cool" for quite a while before something else replaces it.
