Because the S700i is the same phone as the S710s except that it swaps the 850mhz band for the 900mhz band. T-Mobile doesn't use the 850 and 900 is for overseas use only. Also, it swaps the EDGE which T-Mobile doesnt use for an FM radio, and with the S700i you wouldnt have to get it unlocked.

There IS a frequency you need (900mhz) that the phone doesn't have.

I would suggest purchasing the S700i instead of a S710a. The S700i is practically the same phone. It trades the 850 band for 900mhz, and also swaps EDGE (which is of no use to you on Tmo) for an FM tuner.

900mhz band isnt used int he USA though, only overseas along with the 1800mhz band. 🙂

1900 and 850 is all that is used in the USA.

2 things....

1. Are you sure about that?

2. If you are sure, then why does he need a s700i??? The s710a supports 1800 & 1900. If there's no 900 mhz here, then why bother to get the s700? An unlocked s710a would work fine. We already know that Tmo doesn't use 850. That would mean their network must be either 1800 or 1900, right? 😕

He doesnt NEED the S700i, but having one would be alot more convenient because it's alot easier to come buy being unlocked. The only place I know that the S710a is being sold unlocked is Expansys and they havent even begun selling it.

T-Mobile's network uses the 1900 only.

You either have to buy an unlocked phone (google.com) or get cingular to give you the code to unlock it.

Good luck...you'll need it.

Check out people on ebay who sell these phones already unlocked. If you ship it to them they will usually be able to unlock yours for 40 bux.

I unlocked my phone today. It works just fine with a Tmobile SIM. I havent changed the data settings yet, but the voice functions and SMS functions work great.
