They probably are hesitant to give it out to so many people b/c they don't want the code getting out to everybody (like on the internet). If they wanted to prevent this, then they should have just shipped the things already unlocked!
If the phones came unlocked then they would cost more since you can use it w/ any provider. This way they can trap you! ( JK ) I think we would be more fussy if there were no more free ( or close to it ) phones. ( In general ) People already get mad when they have to pay $50 for a $200 phone. They complain about the price and having to be in a contract because of that- that's the cost of the contract. Nothing is free. However- If you pay full price- it ca...

Here's something for all of you Cingular employees to report up your appropriate feedback chain.
You know what locked phones tell me as a consumer? It tells me that you don't have confidence in your service. It tells me that you believe that any rational customer would flee to some other carrier if they could, so the only way you can keep your customers is to lock their phone. It tells me in no uncertain terms that you don't believe you're the best.
Same for those stupid-assed 2-yr service contracts.
If YOU don't believe you're the best, then why should I?
Report that up your feedback chain.
Customers are stupid, and will switch for the smallest problem if they can. So locking a phone to a specific carrier makes sense...plus it's a benefit if you can say "we're the only carrier that sells the SE S710a!"
Same goes for the 2yr service contract. It doesn't say they don't trust their service vs. the competition - it says they don't trust their customers because they are like John Kerry and will constantly flip-flop (I voted for Kerry so don't give me any grief over that comment).
Why do you think the carriers fought local number portability so long and hard? They knew that keeping numbers was yet another barrier that was preventing customers from switching.
The carriers know full well that they provide crappy service and they don't want to have to change their ways.
Locking and 2-yr contracts don't make sense - they're just kludges that allow the carriers to provide crappy service so that they don't have to fully compete with one another.
Think of it this way - what if every type of car used a different kind of gas that you could only buy from the car's manufact...

I'm not saying that subsidies are bad, I'm saying that mandatory subsidies are bad. I understand the good reasons for them, but it needs to be an option or they limit competition.
And no European GSM carriers that I know of lock their phones - you buy a phone in Europe and you can use it on any carrier.
You're wrong about CDMA phones, too. They can be used on other carriers, but the process is a lot more difficult. I won't even call it "unlocking" because that makes it sound far easier than it actually is.
