Got the subsidy Unlock code! Now What?

This maybe a stupid question, But I tried a search and cannot find the answer.
I purchased my New S710A from the local cingular store about a week ago. I called up customer Service and got the subsidy unlock code (not easy but not impossible) They said I could not unlock the phone unless I put in another carriers SIM card. This doesn't sound right as I remember being able to unlock my TREO 600 by entering a few * and # along with the 8 digit number.
Does anyone know how it needs to be entered?
Thank-you all in advance.

Well, I do have Cingular. I called Cust. Service and told them I was traveling to Europe and needed the subsidy unlock code. They have a form they have to fill out and send to tech. support. they will then get back to you within 72hrs. with the code.

The unlock code can differ for each IMEI (your phones serial number). Some phones can have the same unlock code but it is often different.

I had to put a sim for a different subscriber in my Nokia phones when I unlocked them, so it does make sense that this may be the same.

The subsidy unlock codes will be different for each handset. I tried the code i received for my phone on another 710 and it did not work.

here are the instructions for entering your code in to unlock your handset.

1. For the unlocking of a locked S710A, no Simcard is
required.
2. Turn on the handset. Display will indicate "Insert
SIM."
3. Press the left Arrow (
