Tutorial – Verizon/Alltel/Sprint have two separate systems that can provide data services to your mobile device (Mobile phone or PCMCIA card).
- The first is based off of the same system that provides voice calls and is called CDMA 1x. Since the primary function of the CDMA 1x system is voice the data rates that you can achieve are limited to 144k in a best case scenario.
- The next generation system is called Evolution Data Only (EVDO) and is a completely different system that Verizon bought and was installed side by side to the 1x system. This EVDO system can provide up to 2.4 M theoretical and around 500k on average.
