just wondering if this is normal. on my E815 the 1X next to the signal strength bars changes like once every minute to a red box that says EV for a few seconds and then it changes back to 1X. even when i'm at home and the phone is just sitting on the table it still does it. i've watched it. so it can't be a roaming thing or anything. does everyone have this? what does it mean? what's EV?

My phone does the same thing for maybe five minutes after I power up the phone, and then it ceases. I assume that the EV stands for EVDO. Since I'm not in an area that yet has EVDO, I don't know why my phone does this.

This means Verizon is testing EVDO in your area but it is not quite "technically" available. Eventually when it is launched in your area your phone will always display EV. Until then when you attempt to connect it will switch back to 1X.

The EV does stand for EVDO. That's just letting you know whether or not you are able to use the EVDO service, or just 1XRDD. Both of you might be at a border line coverage area. VZW cannot say border line coverage areas are covered by a service because they would get a lot of complaints from customers that are not getting solid coverage.

I'm in NYC and I've noticed that at home (Manhattan), I get solid EVDO coverage, but a few times in the Bronx (under subway tracks), it would switch to 1X. I would also switch to 1X in locations with poor signal strength.

Mine keeps switching back and forth here in San Francisco, which unfortunately draws down the battery in about a day. Best off if you can be all EV or all 1X most of the time.
