Bluetooth & Data Transfer

I was waiting to get the E815 until I came here and saw the VX-8100 was coming out shortly. My fiancee has LG's (7000 and 8000) and has had no complaints.

I want to have a BT fully enabled cell phone, but I can't seem to find a definite answer on whether the phone has it or not. I'm betting on "no". Tell me if I'm wrong.

If I am correct, and it is BT crippled, will I be able to transfer information (such as pictures, etc) from my phone to my pc and vice versa via a different method? I see it comes with USB? Will that work?

Will there be a hack for this phone to enable bluetooth or some other features that will allow me to transfer files? I'm probably gonna get this phone either way, but I'll be damned if I'm gonna pay $15...

a) It has bluetooth, bt it's crippled, as with all verizon phones

b) yes, of course you can just use a data cable, which is probably the easiest way

c) the $15 dollars a month is for VCast, which has pretty much nothing to do with data transfer.

as for hacks I don't know, but if anyone has info there please post

What's the big deal about cripping bluetooth then? I mean, why would verizon do that if a data cable could be used? Wouldn't they be better off charging like $20 more for the phone and leaving it enabled?

I'm sure you'll get quite a few people jumping on this with the "verizon is greedy" line, but I believe the main reason is security. there are bluetooth viruses out there, and those are pretty much impossible to contract on a phone with crippled bluetooth in the verizon manner.

I've also been told that there are workarounds and hacks to regain some of these features, btu I don't know the details, and I know it can be rather complicated

According to the Verizon bluetooth chart, that new E815 doesn't even support Dial up networking. But I saw a circuit city add that said it had DUN. Maybe the 8100 will be on their chart soon.

i'm so sick of people on this forum who don't know what they're talking about.

the only way to get a VERY rare bluetooth virus is to accept a bluetooth connection from someone you don't know. if you do that, you deserve a freakin virus.

verizon cripples bluetooth because of its contract with content providers in Get it Now. the GIN contracts stipulate that verizon users will only be able to obtain games, ringtones, wallpapers and the like from their downloads. bluetooth object-exhange (OBEX) is a way around this, so verizon disables it in order to avoid being sued.

apparently, much dis-information is circulating. security is a very good reason, and not just for the providers. i submit the following link:

BLUESNARFING... look it up.

several programs run in a bash shell (those that know what a shell is will probably know where to find these programs) are all that is required. I think this actually ran on an episode of techtv.

and if you turn of the DISCOVERABLE feature of your phone, no one can connect without your approval.

interesting article in4md. my question is this, will disabling certain BT functions such as OBEX actually prevent people from doing this stuff? i mean anything you encode can be hacked. i judge by the chart they're showing that certain devices are more susceptible to these attacks than others. does only allowing BT for headset and handsfree options completely eliminate these problems?
thanks!

Why would anyone want to use a data cable? That is the whole point behind BT. You should not have to use any cables. I use a cable now and it is a pain in the butt. I want to switch to BT so I don't need any cables. It seems that BT is a pretty expensive option on a phone just so you can talk on a micrphone with no wire.

If I read the VZW BT chart correctly, you cannot even use a BT stereo headset. So what good is having MP3?

There's this invention... called headphones. They're pretty popular with people that own things like cd players, mp3 players, and portable radios. You should look into this new technology.
