Is it really legal for VZW to cripple phones?

I think the reason why VZW can cripple these phones is because they get them first, cripple them then sell them to us.
Can't we buy a untouched phone through lets say LG or one of their ditributors, then contract VZW for JUST phone service, 2yr-1yr plan.

I would be upset if kodak would charge me for every photo I took off my camera and printed myself.
or
what if Creative charged us to put an mp3s on one of their Zen mp3 players.

Should we be mad at LG for allowing this (if we cannnot buy these outright) or VZW for doing all they can to make a buck?

This Cell phone business seems backwards.
Is there anything we as consumers can do about this??

This is just my opinion, and an assumption...

But I'm pretty sure that LG and Verizon have contracts between themselves. I don't think Verizon is making any changes to these phones. I think that the manufacturers(sp) and Verizon work together with these features.

Yes, LG has stated that this will have a MP3 player... but did they EVER say you can upload your own songs? I'm talking about LG, now, not any forums or rumors. LG probably AGREED to host the MP3 player with the Music On Demand service... things are discussed and legally put in contracts to avoid changes and such...

Verizon doesn't just slice open phones and make their arrangements. This is a company that just host phone services... not one that designs phones.

I agree! Furthermore, Verizon Wireless has had so many class action lawsuits in the past, I think they know how to cover themselves with this MP3 situation. They use every marketing gimmick available, narrowly staying within the law. When they cross over the line, bang, lawsuit!!

But that would mean that every mp3 player out there is breaking the law. Even iPod allows you to play your own mp3's. You dont have to buy from iTunes you just have to use their player to interface with the iPod.
Its one thing having record companies telling you to download one of their songs you have to use their player. But its quite another thing when a phone service provider and phone maker apparently collude to limit how you can use their products. And there must be a 3rd party out there involved in this too. Where is VZ getting the music from for this service?
But to get back to the legality... is it legal for VZ to advertise a phone with features that cannot be used? Is that illegal advertising? Dont state attorneys general deal wit...

It is PERFECTLY legal... why? Because Verizon Wireless DOES have the MP3 player ON the phone. How do I know? Because the MP3 player buttons are on the phone. If things were changed, forums like this would have let us know ahead of time. Trust me... business people think through decisions, over, and over, and over again to avoid lawsuits...

Verizon wouldn't make the mistake of fals advertisement.

Also, have you ever thought that maybe WE made most of the assumptions? Where did Verizon say that the MP3 player would allow your own music uploads? Other forums might have said that, but did Verizon's site say that? Did Verizon spokesmen say that?

That's like the assumption that BT wouldn't be crippled. No one said it wouldn't be crippled....

all of this whining about being charged to send a picture. personally pay the money for the service or don't do it at all. Don't blame verizon for the fact that we live in a capitalist country where the main goal is to make a buck. There are plenty of cell phone carriers out there that don't cripple phones. go to cingular or something. Oh wait they have crappie reception, hmm who would have thought that you would want to use your phone as a phone and not to just send pictures. If you want to be able to call someone stay with verizon, if you want to transfer pictures for free go to a different carrier. If you haven't noticed sprint's treo 650 doesn't allow file movements. Get a clue, the industry will slowly follow verizon, y you ask? simple ...
