Cases and Insurance--Informal Poll

Prof

Jul 22, 2005, 11:09 AM
Having had my 8100 for two whole days now, I am wondering what everyone else is doing about two relatively minor issues.
1. I'm such a klutz 🤭 --forever dropping things, including my phone! Do you keep yours in a case? If so, what kind and where did you get it? (I looked at my Verizon store--they have nothing, not even an 8100 yet! And the website seems to have only pouches, which I don't much like.)
2. I've never bothered with insuring a phone before. But . . . this one is a bit of a step above my old Nokia 🤣 🤣 Are any of you swinging for the extra $5/month (as if VZW doesn't wring enough from us!!!)?
Thanks 🙂

I have a horizontal leather pouch that has LOOPS (not a clip) that my belt goes thru - it cannot come off unless my belt comes off. It closes securely with velcro. I have never had a phone get knocked off my hip since I have this case.

This type of case is hard to find with the LOOPS - I see them all the time with clips. I'm thinking that the sellers of phones want it that way!!

I have the leather Verizon one and it seems to do ok. I dropped my 8000 a couple of times and was glad the case protected it from getting scratched, etc.

I do the insurance on my phones for only a little while until the phone is no longer worth it or it's new retail price has dropped to a lower price point. I've also been in the store and seen people bringing in phones they've dropped and are in 2 or more pieces and they almost faint when they realize how much they have to spend to get the same model.

I just use the plastic holster that I bought with my 8100 and put it in my pocket with the phone inside, clip on outside to avoid bumping into things and scratching the phone. I personally don't like the leather cases because it covers your phone so much you don't get to see it! Changes the whole look/feel, and I don't like that about it.

As far as insurance....I am very anal about my phones and do not like any scratches or anything on it and since I bought this one for retail, I also bought the insurance, that way if I do drop it and scratch it so badly I can't stand it, then I only pay $50 for a new one instead of $439.99 again. Makes sense to me. I figure it's only $60/year, so I'll sacrifice that to know I have the protection.

Thanks, all who responded. I'm still a bit up in the air about cases. I'll try to get to Circuit City tomorrow and see if they have anything. (And if I can ditch the older son, his girlfriend, and my mom--all of whom will be here this weekend!!!!!) But you all have convinced me that the insurance is a good thing to have 🙂

I use the fitted leather case with my cellphones. It clips to the belt very securely with the new style clips. The clip has never come off unintentionally.

Also, the case protects the phone quite a bit.
In the case of the 8100, the plastics that are used on the blue faceplate and the flashlight are fairly soft plastics (compared to other plastics), and I feel are quite vulnerable to scratches and abrasions.

If you like to look at the phone a lot, you can remove the case when you are at home or at the office. 😁

But the first time you drop the phone without a case, you'll be sorry! 😲

I'm pretty careful, so I have not had insurance for the 8 years I have owned cellphones. And I have not had any losses, either. Thank God!...

I'm 99% sure that if you decide to do the insurance thing and get a new phone they're gonna send you a refurbished model and not a brand new one. I read that somewhere on the vzw website.

I've claimed past phones on insurance several times in the past and have ALWAYS recieved a BRAND NEW one in it's original Verizon box with all accessories (even though accessoried didn't need replaced) and they even had the blue stickers on the phones, so they definately were not refurbished.

Just another point about this topic: The other reason I KNOW you get a brand new one w/ insurance is think of this....why would anyone pay $5/month PLUS a $50 deductible to get a refurbished phone from insurance when they can get a refurbished one from verizon under the manuf. warranty up to a year for free? Another reason why the insurance phone if NEW.

I have the same. All the flea-markets carry them. I paid $7.00. And yes I did knock the phone out, brushed against a pole. Mine was magnets and I added Velcro. I also put the phone in upside down, with the antenna sticking out the hole in the side. Added protection I also keep dropping phones. Glad it was my 6000 that got not out, not the 8100.

I normally use a Clip for my phones. LG usually makes a clip that holds the phone pretty well, but i haven't tried this one yet. I definatly get the insurance. If anything happens to the phone you are able to get the exact phone that you had, plus any accessories that were damaged or stolen with it, very useful. its a $50 deductible, which sounds expensive, but since you would have to by the phone at the regular $400+, $50 seems a lot more reasonable to me.

Hope That Helps

It pays to get the insurance. $60 a year is not a lot, considering that you'd pay over $200 to buy a phone anywhere near this one if you lose or break the phone and you're not eligible for a contract extension. Plus you mentioned you're a klutz . . . 😁

I use a belt holster from e-holster:

http://www.eholster.com/ebbalnylforw.html »

they are spendy ($36.00) + shipping, but it has saved my phone for over 2 years..

(I use to go through them in 6 months or so).

I suggest the medium: It's too long for the vx8100, but the width is about right, their small size is made for real wide phones, and I don't like how most phones fit.

I sent the link to the balistic nylon version. It has belt loops, but they snap. But even when I catch it on something. Usually only one will snap off, so the phone is still in the case.

Of course, this doesn't protect your phone once it's in your hand. So you may still want a phone snugg leather case around the phone..

Has anybody ever put in an insurance claim? I did with my 6000. They didn't have any at the time and tried t con me into a $20 phone that VZW was selling. Got into a big fight with them and VZW. What the hell am I paying for? They something compatible. BS. Told them to shove it and went to a store. Told them I used it for business, paid the $50 and got a brand new phone.

I have put in a claim several times over the past few years and always recieved the same phone, brand new in original Verizon box and everything that comes with it (charger, holster, whatever) even though it's only the phone being replaced. The only way they wouldn't give you the same phone is if they have phased it out and no longer sell it.

Fine. Even if the phone is phased out, there are more compatible phones that a $20.00 phone. They must have had some problems with the insurance, because they just changed company's.

It's Lock\Line in some areas, others have Asurion.

Why would you call Verizon though? That's like wrecking your car and yelling at GM because your insurance company didn't give you want you want. It's not Verizon's choice who the insurance carriers are, they just bill for it. I doubt they even make any money on selling it.

I've put several claims in, in the past few years with zero issues. I'm not sure why you bothered arguing with VZW cause you aparently arent' aware that they are not the ones that are giving you the phone. In fact they tell you that you have to call the seperate insurance company yourself usually.

I got the leather case with it. I've never really liked those things since phones became small enough to put it your pocket, but I'm getting used to it. I just hate having to remove it every time I have to switch the Mini SD card.

I use a Nite-Ize holster:

http://www.niteize.com/productdetail.php?category_id ... »

I ripped the leather case that came with my phone from Verizon just trying to get it on. I found this holster at a Verizon store the next day. I like the holsters better because they don't cover the phone when you are trying to use it, but they offer good protection while you are wearing it.

I really like this holster because it has plenty of other pouches in it that you can keep stuff.

I bought it for $19.00 at a Verizon store... a few days later I saw it for $14.95 at Lowes. Go figure.

Are you using the 8100 in the niteze pouch? Are you having trouble with the front buttons being activated while in pouch and draining the battery? And at $5. a month I insure both my phones. Never know!!!

Yea, I'm using the 8100 with the Nite-ize pouch. I haven't had a problem with the buttons on the front. The front of the pouch is bowed out a bit, so it doesn't even touch the front of my phone.

It dosn't come with a leather case, I think they got an accessory bundle with their phone, which would have a leather case in that.
