OTA - Does it really update the phone's software?

In my Verizon service plan documentation, there is a section labeled "Make sure your phone has the latest software" by using *228. I was under the impression that it only updated the NAM, PRL, etc. Will this function really update the phone's software, such as when there is a volume and other fixes for the 8100?

From everything I've ever heard, no. You are correct about it updating PRL, etc., though. I don't think the technology is available yet to remotely update the other types of software you were asking about. As far as I know, you've still got to take your phone to service dept. to get it flashed.

I'm curious if there are any other people who might have more info on this as well, though. Just giving advice from what I've seen and heard.

you guys are both thinking the right thing. using *228 option 2 only upgrades your preferred roaming list. it does not change anything else about how your phone operates. option 1 can change your "nam" settings if you've had an esn switch. to get the newer software you'll still need to go to the store and get the phone "flashed"

Flashing costs nothing. It just updates the firmware/software in the phone. It's Thier fault if the firmware is flawed, so its thier problem to fix. Besides, it gives Verizon the ability to change anything they want. IE - new firmware updates for VX8000 disable the USB Modem, i think to avoid people downloading free stuff like we've been doing. Thats why I haven't gotten mine flashed.

Agreed. But those of us on the 8100 will be flashing to rectify the volume issue that's in-work (it took a flash or two to get the 4x00 series LGs perfect before), plus enable the Media Player (MOD) feature on the front etc. So we're kinda screwed until the phone is fully enabled.

So my only question would be ... where the heck is the change log for the phone stored? Would be nice to see what's changed and have visibility of new firmware to know when to go to the store...

They've gotta be practicing configuration management, but where?

So you can choose if you want your phone flashed with software upgrades? I thought Verizon just did it over their network somehow? As for 228 they recommend you do it every three months for new roaming areas, etc.

Yes, *228 + #2 is recommended every month or two to simply update the PRL (preferred roaming list) and other minor tweaks. *228 + #1 will update that plus update phone settings (like network settings, NAM, etc.) to their proper settings if a phone gets all screwy and needs fixing. Helps with trouble tickets. OTA updating does not handle the firmware, however, as you're essentially wiping that which is handling the call to begin with and you'd need a buffer with twice the memory to handle it plus software to do it. So, in short, no...
