When you connect data cable for Bitpim/QPST, is your phone charging?

This may be a silly question, but when I connect my phone with the cable and use Bitpim, my phone will say it's charging. Is this normal and is it actually charging, or does it just say that because something is plugged into the charging port?

Just curious...thanks!

Yes, it is actually charging the cable is a datalink connection and charger.
