GPS in Service Menu

Has anybody played around with the GPS function in the service menu?

I haven't really found anything but i was playing with it and my phone started to transmit something because I saw the little arrows moving near the battery indicator.

I wonder what kind of GPS functionality this phone can/will have if any?

I know VZ is working on GPS location services....

Anybody?

Not that I'm aware of... Slightly off topic, but if anyone with any power is watching the threads, I'll tell you what would be pretty slick:
If Get-it-now apps could use become "location based Services" and refference this info. I.E. - MapQuest, Find me directions to place X from "my current location"

Or, Find me a Pizza joint with in 5 miles of "my current location"

Now wouldn't that be sweet.

i do know with the phones now they have gps for emergeny locations. you can also turn it on for all the time, not just emergencies. last time i asked verizon sales rep about gps as in for you to find your way, they weren't there and he doubted they would. who knows, one guy told me i had to purchase a program from best buy for about $80 to use my mp3 player on this phone so what do they know?

Yeah, sorry, you seem to have answered the question more directly than I did.. lol... anyways, the Verizon Rep you talked to would be correct. No "Location Based Services" for consumer devices as of yet. Just On-Star and Telemetrty devices.

If you subscribe to mobile web, you can go to YAHOO and send SMS alerts through there that will instantly tell you where somthing is, give you a phone number, lots of other info. To find out more info, go to Yahoo on your phone, then to SMS alerts and it will give you all of the info.

You can do the same with Google without subscribing to mobile web.

Send a txt to 46645 (googl) containing what you want to find, and where it might be.

EX: "Pizza 90210"

You will then get replies containing pizza joints in the vicinity of Beverly hills.

missing the point though,... I just thought it would be neat to have the gps functionality tell where you are automatically.

Yeah, I've thought about this function, too, and how cool it would be. If you could set it up where your GPS is always on, then your friends could find you if you were at a party but didn't know where, or if you were just drunk and needed someone to pick you up. I don't know how many times I've talked to someone that was either at a killer party or needed a ride but was to drunk to be coherent

its a great idea and nextel offers it, its not even an extra service that u have to pay for, u just go to the site, so it definitely is possible, but it might be a difference in networks, but i'm pretty sure that verizon could do it, although knowing them they'll probably charge for that too.

There is a function on the phone called "Location" which you can set to either "911 Only" or "Location On."

Is the GPS function possibly used to determine your location in case of emergency?

😕

Got the idea of the "911 only", although not many 911 call centers have the technology yet to pinpoint a callers location. I thought the "location on" feature was invented for overprotective parents to keep tabs on where their kids were at all times. You were supposed to be able to get a "fix" on the location of that phone any time you wanted. That would be a nice feature for me as I have a relative with a recurring case of Dementia. I have had a couple calls from police as she has been wandering around the streets not knowing her name or where she lived. What a great idea that "ICE" contact was. Put that in her phone as soon as I heard, but to be able to get an immediate fix on location would be great.
